This a very good question to think about.
Shots Fired at White House Correspondents Dinner
Re: Shots Fired at White House Correspondents Dinner
To me, security worked very well in this incident. The shooter did not get past the security perimeter. He was unable to kill the people he was targeting.
I'm surprised this is being treated as a failure in some of the narratives. Why is that?

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Makes us feel important to be able to explain the failings of others.
Negative news sells better than positive news.
We don't like to admit when someone we dislike does things right.

This is a particularly interesting one, because the "security was a failure!" narrative seems to be neither left- nor right-wing coded. I frankly don't know where it is coming from.
I'm looking forward to Matt Taibbi/Michael Tracey's analysis this afternoon.

I haven’t heard it called a “failure “
I have heard Trump and his cabinet praising the security team for their responsive to what could have been SO much worse. The fact he was staying at the very hotel making it much easier to do what he did was of concern. Apparently in a case like this possibly treating guests like people boarding flights would have eliminated his weaponry he brought, he had on his person shotgun, gun, & knives. Sounds like a big plan he had.

Let us not forget William Randolph Hurst. Very few libel or slander cases against politicians are ever successful.barnhart wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2026 7:43 amI think you should do some digging into that history, I think the media landscape of his day was less reliable, more partisan and less truthful. I would compare it to grocery store tabloids.Valerie wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2026 7:22 am George Washington was known for his honesty and probably assumed the opposition told the truth. Not sure, hard for me to remember if newspapers back then get sued for lying like msm does now. They don’t go away afterwards but it has added to the mistrust. People in general are less honest these days. I have management in more than one job position or location asking me to lie- they justified it. Lost a lot by refusing to.
In many ways we are in a golden age of media and yet we are less happy with it. In the past it was more censored, more controlled and more propagandistic.
The media kept quiet about scandals from both parties. Particularly in places with multiple newspapers, hunting scandals was a bipartisan pursuit.

This guy rushed the first checkpoint. There will always be a first checkpoint. In my eyes, a sterling success.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2026 11:04 amMakes us feel important to be able to explain the failings of others.

He had a manifesto, and doesn't appear to have been aiming to do that. His manifesto reveals he seemed to see himself as some kind of modern-day Bonhoeffer.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2026 1:48 pm This guy rushed the first checkpoint.
