In my own life my solution was “drive a car and rent a parking spot”. It got stressful facing one of these situations every few weeks. For an example, some of these crazy people think you looked at them and then will come over and scream at you and start threatening you, like they are trying to start a fight

Complaining about Penny seems like looking at the wrong problem.
Deranged people on drugs should not be in public transportation.
I faced this last year on public transit...a homeless man made threatening statements to my two year old...we moved to the other side of the car. He lunged at us and I fled down the platform at the next stop. Won't be taking public transit anytime soon.
That's very scary and an unusual experience... Lot's of people ride public transit and don't experience things at that level. I've ridden public transit many times (even though not living in city) and have never seen anything like this. I love riding subways/rapid transit/etc. Millions of people use public transit daily and don't see this kind of thing very often, if ever. (Sure, strange / weird things, but not attacking people)
Mentally ill, homeless people naturally migrate to the system for warmth and shelter and cause problems. Generally this handled by MTA employees but there are examples of violence. There are also many examples of people teaming up to restrain violent people as well.

A LOT of crime, aggression, violence, vandalism, goes UNREPORTED.
Southerner, my guess is, you didn’t even think of reporting, just decided not to return? This is THE NORM, when possible.

It’s happened to me and my family, i was first assaulted by a neighbor, probably in his 20’s, when i was 14. More than once.
i got away while he laughed at me. i never told anyone. i didn’t think of it. i got away. in my mind, the important part.

As i said above, both my son and son in law, as young adult men, were assaulted in some way, one in Dallas, the other in the Seattle area. My daughter was brutally raped in college, never reported. She didn’t tell me until after she graduated.

My family is small, that’s about 100% for us.
i’m pretty sure there are thousands+thousands of people more vulnerable than us who face harsh realities frequently.
mostly unreported.

i have dreams THEY will one day be able to report “nothing to see here” as readily as some in this topic.
seriously. i believe many don’t bother to dream of such a world, having been ignored+denied for so long.

i hope Iryna Zarutska will become a catalyst for public safety.

I am glad to know this is unusual. I have ridden on public transportation a few times and have had a negative experience every time. Cities are horrible places for families and I won't be using public transit in the future.

i’ve had mostly good experiences in my life, in many settings.
however, bad things happen, no matter age or description. it reminds me of Russian Roulette, everything’s great until it’s not.

thus, Iryna Zarutska.
whose tragedy happens to have gotten attention when others have not.

i grieve for those who have no escape. i hope for improvements so there’s no need to want to escape. why not?
there is no reason to accept violence anywhere. i’d like to stop doing that.

Your guess is wrong. I reported the incident to the DC Metro police and my hunch is that they did nothing.

ok. thanks.
i’ve had similar happen.

in about 1979 i was attacked from behind and (dragged) into an alley. i blacked out, i only remember being attacked then running away, i had one fear, of death, that i wouldn’t see my husband or baby again, i had no idea i was injured until i got home.
we called the police, made a report, they revisited the place with me. nothing. ever.

in retrospect, the attack was so quick and smooth, i got the idea this was not the first time. i have wondered how many times.
same with my daughter, who made no report. how many others??

now i worry about my grdaughter.

one wonder is, has anything happened she hasn’t mentioned? the desire to be silent is strong. for many reasons.

boys are just as vulnerable. they need to be as alert and cautious as girls, if not moreso.
the pressures to be silent are probably greater for boys than for girls.

repeating, tho.
there are many people who exist is worse daily circumstances than any of us/my family.
they deserve better.

the unusual thing about Iryna Zarutska is that there is video+audio coverage of BEFORE, DURING, AFTER.
it’s not hidden.

Again, that's unfortunate, but not the experience of many, probably a majority. Can you remember your feelings/expectations before trying public transportation?

Cities are wonderful places where the presence of God is manifest and to the full. Many families, including Christian ones, flourish in cities.

Who said anything about majorities? :?
Yes, criminals are in the minority. They cause outsized harm and chaos to others.

In my view, all the more reason to address “small” problems of crime and violence. Why not?

My view is, Iryna Zarutska represents far more people in the U.S. than Charlie Kirk. Public figures are rarely assassinated.
Why don’t “we” ordinary people matter? Definitely including ordinary black teens in urban settings. Who live+die as stats, at most.

Yeah. Call me crazy. i’m for getting everyone out of the sewers. i think it’s entirely possible. i have faith in that.
Jesus never said, “o. you’re poor. the rules are different for you. go ahead and sin, kill, et al.” nope.

He didn’t insult people like that. He raised them up, giving them the victory over sin.

Job 1: forget about statistics.
To repeat, when you/your loved ones are victims, it’s 100%.

Yes, my expectation was that I was going to take the train from Point A to Point B and enjoy the ride! Next.
