Iryna Zarutska / 2002-2025

Iryna Zarutska
i want to note this young woman’s death because this sort of “AMBUSH+EXECUTE” attack is ‘way too common, MOSTLY IGNORED.
Her death is somewhat unique in that LIGHT RAIL CAMERAS caught actions before, during, after the attack.

She was doing “everything right” not speaking or provoking in any way.

This topic is for Christian prayers and grieving her senseless death.
To recognize the HARSH UGLY world many young people navigate everyday, not knowing who or when someone might lash out at them.

There are many graphic videos. Many show the NONCHALANT way her attacker, Decarlos Brown, opened his knife then attacked her from behind. A literal human sacrifice. His words reflected this was a hate crime due to her skin color. No remorse.

To repeat, the clarity of camera recording is unusual, typically, there are ambiguous moments that raise questions -
or no recording at all. Usually no recording at all.

This attack is much like the “KNOCKOUT GAME” but deadly. The Knockout Game can be fatal, not always.
It’s based on AMBUSH of unsuspecting targets. Really COWARDLY.

Crime against everyday people is far more common than political targets, which get outsized media attention. viewtopic.php?t=8291
To repeat, everyday victims of street crimes rarely get notice. Not a blip on the screen.

Insanity is a popular defense.
i believe it’s possible to be CRIMINALLY INSANE, which should equate to loss of privilege to be free in public settings.

i like public transportation.
i’ve enjoyed high quality transport in the Seattle area. it’s great.

However, CRIME+DRUGS are real problems.

Both my son and son in law have been targeted in the PNW system and Dallas. As adults.

For a time, my grdaughter was riding public transport to high school.
Her uncle was LIVID. 100% against her being on those busses. Esp alone.

Drug residue
There have been reports of drug residue found on these “great” busses i’ve ridden.
Drug residue is scary, because current street drugs are so powerful, minute amounts can harm or kill.
It’s nothing to take lightly.

particularly when the weak and innocent like women and children are in danger

In my own life my solution was “drive a car and rent a parking spot”. It got stressful facing one of these situations every few weeks. For an example, some of these crazy people think you looked at them and then will come over and scream at you and start threatening you, like they are trying to start a fight

Complaining about Penny seems like looking at the wrong problem.
Deranged people on drugs should not be in public transportation.

The main issue with public transportation is there are some people out there in society who are violate social norms of behavior, mainly as a result of drugs or mental illness. And we sometimes encounter them on the streets or public transportation. People who are smelly or dirty or clearly mentally ill. And they make us nervous and uncomfortable.

We do have a big problem with drug addiction and untreated mental illness in this country. Which is often linked to visible homelessness. And the solutions to that problem are complex, politically difficult, and expensive.

That said you are 10x more likely to be a victim of a crime while driving cars than while riding public transportation. And on a per-mile basis public transportation is about 30x safer than driving. So the perception doesn't match the reality.

For example, one of the most common places for women to be assaulted in this country is deserted parking lots and parking garages. But we don't attribute these crimes to using cars as a means of transportation. Even though they really should be. There is safety in numbers on crowded train stations and trains that doesn't exist when you are alone in a dark parking garage after working late. Statistically speaking, parking lots and parking garages are the most common places for women to be assaulted outside of the home. Public transit is way down on the list.

In NYC middle school age children ride the trains to school. It's safe to use regardless the breathless reporting.

Have you viewed the Iryna Zarutska attack? Any opinion? Prayers?
Do you think she and other everyday victims deserve coverage, or major focus should be on political targets?
Wouldn’t political targets be rare compared to ordinary people? Young men?

i would expect if entire schools are regularly using public transport, numbers would equate to relative safety.
Incidents seem to target individuals like IZ was, simply catching a ride home after her pizza place shift.

IZ wasn’t immediately reported. Eventually, i think because of clear camera footage, it came out.
To repeat, MOST do not receive a blip in news.

i live near Chicago. victims are usually preported in NUMBERS, not by name. not breathlessly. :)
ignored, except by numbers. 10, 15, 50+ this is typical reporting. very unglamorous.

i grieve for their loved ones. it must be horrifying. by the hundreds and thousands. each year.

i don’t want all victims named. i want no violence, no victims.

Perception and reality are two different things.

This is very much like the modern helicopter parent notion so many people have these days that it is unsafe to let your children out the front door unattended. Let alone do things like walk to school or go to the park themselves. When neighborhood crime rates today against children are about where they were in the "Leave it to Beaver" days of the 1950s and the streets are considerably safer then they were in say the 1990s.

Yes I read about the Iryna Zarutska murder and it is tragic and senseless. And appears to be a case of someone with untreated mental illness engaging in senseless crime. How we address that problem short of just opening up an Auschwitz concentration camp outside every major city is the question. The answers are difficult, expensive, and complex and among the most challenging we face as a society. Politicizing it makes it worse and makes solutions more difficult to reach.

Perception and reality. Here in Vancouver WA (metro area of about 500,000) we have had at least a dozen transportation related deaths over the past year or so resulting from crime. Vehicular homicide, drunk driving, road rage shooting into other vehicles, shootings and assaults in parking lots, pedestrians and cyclists murdered by reckless hit-and-run or drunk drivers, and so forth. All of them car-related on our local highways and not a one in our robust public transportation system (buses and BRT lines). And of course none of them made the national news because carnage related to cars just isn't news. Here is just one example that barely made the local news: https://clbn.us/G4Q8D and here is another recent example: https://clbn.us/i3XCQ yet no one is talking about how unsafe it is to drive to the local supermarket.

I faced this last year on public transit...a homeless man made threatening statements to my two year old...we moved to the other side of the car. He lunged at us and I fled down the platform at the next stop. Won't be taking public transit anytime soon.

The person in question had been arrested 14 times.

There was no safety in numbers for Iryna. None of them bothered to help her at all as she bled to death.

What we should have learned from the Covington HS video scandal is that what we see on a viral video isn't necessarily what people experiencing an event saw or perceived. Here is one analysis of the video suggesting that bystanders likely didn't immediately see what was happening or understand that she was in distress: https://thehill.com/homenews/5496059-ir ... n-killing/

In any event, we have chosen to build a society in which we massively underfund and neglect mental health crises such that the criminal justice system has little choice but to recycle people through the system. The barriers to involuntary commitment are enormous and in many if not most communities there is no space to put them anyway. Short of building concentration camps for the mentally ill to lock them up permanently, what do you propose?

That said, the points that I made still stand. You are more likely to be the victim of a crime when you drive your car than when you take public transportation. And you are far more likely to die in your car than on public transportation. We have just normalized car violence and so don't notice the daily carnage right in front of us. And so car violence never makes the news.

Public transit is also a necessity for millions of Americans. I have a co-worker who is blind. Without public transportation he would lose his independence and ability to work. He can't just choose to drive to work. He has to take the bus. There are millions of Americans for whom this is true. So we should be looking for ways to make it better and safer. Just like we should be looking for ways to make our streets and highways safer for all users as well.
