Charlie Kirk's killing, while obviously not that of a political leader, feels like something almost in the category of those kinds of events. We've had the attempts - Reagan and Trump. But nothing successful since then, till now, at least that I can think of.

These kinds of assassinations are nothing new in US history. If nothing else, it is amazing that there haven't been more attempts when you consider how controversial politicians and politically-related figures put on public events and speeches all the time.
i was young, but remember the 60’s assassinations.

There have been many-many plans and attempts since.
MOST “would-bes” and even up-close attempts survive to face trial. Ford and Reagan had close calls at close range.
Their would-bes enjoyed lengthy prison time.

If i recall, obama assassinated suspected would-bes, i recall a male suspect in Wisconsin, and Miriam Carey in D.C., without known plan or motive.

Comparing the varying circumstances and results has been puzzling to me.

i didn’t follow C Kirk at all, i knew of his name.
This is a horrifying tragic thing, i’m sorry young people have to be exposed to it. Ugly horrifying violence.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

Charlie Kirk's death touches us all. No matter what you think of him. This is not a time for hatred or partisanship, this is a time to grieve.

One individual committed this act of violence. “They” did not do this. No one side bears sole responsibility for the rancor and hatred that divide our country.

So let's grieve, lament, and reflect on how we can avoid contributing to that cycle of hatred and rancor ourselves. And let us pray for this country.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Show some respect. Now is NOT the time.
THANK YOU ROBERT! I don't think anytime is the right time to make such comments personally.

Assassinations create martyrs. Assassinations never succeed in disposing of the victims' ideals. I have yet to see an assassination suppress the ideas or ideals of the victim. In fact it has the opposite effect and makes these ideals stronger and more popular.

I remember the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination. JFK and RFK. The attempts on Presidents and Vice Presidents. Gandhi was still being talked about by the time I was old enough to understand.

It is a dark day when a man is murdered simply because he asks uncomfortable questions. May God have mercy on us all.

I also don’t like statements such as “they” got him. This was the work of an evil person. There can be discussion of how a person comes to such an evil place, but the person is the one who committed this evil act.

In these times, “they” is commonly and formally used as a singular. i don’t use it that way.
i don’t agree with that use, esp when it comes to critical situations with first responders. i hope the use is reversed asap.

First responders need to know, in life+death terms. Singular or plural.

Aside from that, nothing is known about the shooter(s), motivations, planning, etc. Too soon to know. imho

It is a bitter irony that he was shot while discussing mass shooting.
