As I have documented over and over, nobody needs to worry about what an ER visit or ICU treatment will cost. If the family with 5 kids earns under $120k, they can be fully covered under CHIP or Medicaid. If they earn over that, they can use traditional health insurance. If they choose to use a mutual aid sort of arrangement, mutual aid frequently pays for things like ER visits and ICU stays.
when I went to the ER, our bill following the ER was 27,000$
When they found out, we didn’t have insurance they dropped that to 18,000$
On inquiring about qualifying for Medicaid with my five dependents, and looking at the rates for my state, we did not qualify and we make under 100,000.
There was some gimmick where if I had filed the same month, Medicaid would help pay the overall cost and drop my bill down to 3000 but we found out about it after the fact, even though we had filed early enough. The paperwork is not processed until it was no longer an option.
If we paid before the bill was due, it would only be 8000.
We had applied for financial aid, but we’re told the bill would go to collections if we didn’t pay it. We borrowed money and paid the bill. By that point, the actual hospital bill had been further reduced to about 4600 and then we had three or four other bills from different services associate with the ER visit that we had to pay as well.
I actually just got one more bill the other day that we need to pay from that ER visit.
Their charity program would cover 180 days retroactive as well but after you applied for it, they didn’t do anything with it for 120 days. By the time they finally approved it I had one month remaining covered and they gave us money to pay for that ER visit which we then returned to the person who loaned it to us.
Thanks to that coverage, I was also able to take care of the surgery I needed.
This is all thanks to the hospital wanting the tax write off. I did not qualify for any government aid other than that one gimmick Medicaid thing that didn’t work.
All the bills that were not from the primary hospital were not covered by the hospital charity and that worked out to probably close to $2000.
Back in Oregon I would’ve had everything covered and it would’ve been no problem at all. I could’ve even made more money and still been covered there.
I suppose that’s just in the grand scheme of things comparing a Republican state to a Democrat state and how they look at Healthcare.
