I feel like a broken record here, but I said $80 for a "doctor visit", not going into the ER. I switch to a mutual aid plan a few years ago and asked my doctor what cash price would be. It was $80 for any visit. That's generally the standard around here.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:46 am I am still waiting for your 80 emergency care visit without insurance. I looked up the median for the relevant CPT code. It is not 80$, if the child is sick. Many in our community do not have insurance, remember?
When my kids are sick I call my primary care provider and either get in the same day or get an appointment the next day. (There is also a walk in clinic if I wanted to do that but I usually prefer to see our family doctor.)
But if you don't have insurance:
- Generally HCAP kicks in for people under 250% of FPL. ($120k for a family of 5 kids in Texas.)
- Medicaid in Texas kicks in at $63k annual income or less for a family of 5 kids.
- If you use mutual aid, well, use mutual aid. That means asking for help if you can't afford something. That's how mutual aid works.
- A hospital will work with you if you have an ER visit you can't pay for. I had one when I was between jobs around 15 years ago, when the medical safety net wasn't nearly as good as it is now. They reviewed my tax return, income, etc. and first said I was only responsible for $1,000. Later on after a secondary review it was reduced to nothing.
- Check healthcare.gov for health plans - they may be cheaper than someone thinks.
We have a big safety net in America.
