I saw an article where they interviewed the driver and he said the Secret Service only let him drive Trump a couple of feet. I guess for Ken that equates to circling aimlessly around an airport tarmac.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 1:47 pmI'm curious how you figured out that he "circled aimlessly around an airport tarmac in a MAGA garbage truck."Ken wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 12:34 pm Trump really really wishes he was still running against Biden doesn't he? And,Ken wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 1:16 pmIt is an election. What you or I think means nothing. We aren't voters in swing states. What matters in terms of swinging votes is what kinds of narratives circulate among swing voters and undecided types. And what the current narrative in Hispanic social media is the following:R7ehr wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 12:48 pmA comedian (1. not the candidate) calling Puerto Rico (2. a place) a floating garbage island (3. of who is a minority of the Democratic supporters), is more outrageous than a sitting President(1) calling all(100%) his opponents supporters (3. people, not a place) garbage?
1. For the past year Trump has doubled down on calling immigrants garbage, vermin, criminals, eaters of pets, etc. If you want examples of this narrative there are hundreds of them. I trust you can find them for yourselves. There are endless examples of Trump calling both immigrants garbage and Democrats garbage.
2. At Trump's big closing celebration in Madison Square Garden, one of his invited speakers calls Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage. Which, because of all of Trump's previous statements about Hispanic immigrants, Puerto Ricans immediately interpret as being about THEM PERSONALLY, and not some statement about litter on the beaches or some such. These comments go viral.
3. A day or two later, Trump rolls out in a MAGA garbage truck dressed like a garbage man and those images get picked up and paired with Trump's previous comments about immigrants and the Madison Square Garden quotes to re-circulate on Hispanic social media. And draws new attention to Trump's previous comments. Very much an own-goal for Trump. How many TikTok videos do you think have been made of Trump in a garbage truck with his words about Hispanics being garbage or Puerto being garbage overlaid on top?
As for Biden's comments? They aren't getting any traction and no one cares because everyone knows Biden stutters and has jumbled syntax and was really talking about the Trump "supporter's" comments [i.e. the comedian] not Trump "supporters" generally as is clear from the transcript. Punctuation makes a difference. One can't say the same about Trump because his endless litany of comments about immigrants have been relentless and unambiguous.
4. Oh the partisan howling that would ensue if the roles were mirrored.
If Trump had called all of Harris’s supporters garbage, and the spinning of the importance of punctuation had some liberal speaker would have referred to Idaho being a mountain of garbage.
And the charges of corruption had Trump forced the official Whitehouse transcript to be edited in order to make his statement sound different. Probably would have been talk of impeachment.

However, Biden is no Ronald Reagan, so the punctuation is not obvious.

In fact, Trump does it all the time. Unambiguously and irrespective of punctuation.

Of course he does. I’m not saying he doesn’t. He is in a league of his own. I could acknowledge that without qualms for either side.
I am calling out the partisan hackery going on. That is something each of us can actually control and effect. That is as tiresome as the candidates themselves. That is as poisonous for the country as the candidates themselves.
We can not control what the candidates or others say.
I also pointed out the difference in these two instances, in order to highlight the blind partisan behavior in how they justify and excuse and condemn.

Are you saying that you think there would have been an uproar in the WaPo and NYT if Iran had said their reason for waiting to retaliate against Israel was because they want Trump to be elected?R7ehr wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 2:54 pm Of course he does. Interesting. I suspect AI generated videos but either way it makes no difference to me.Ken wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 2:03 pmIts been all over social media. Re: Elon Musk. Twitter. Babylon Bee.
Possibly. It doesn't really matter. The garbage truck meme is playing like an inside joke to Trump's own supporters who are already voting for him. But it is playing the opposite to undecided Hispanics and Puerto Ricans who are seeing it as a doubling-down of the "Puerto Ricans and immigrants are garbage" message.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 3:32 pmInteresting. We are in a post-truth era in politics. We can all debate what is the actual truth here on this forum. But that isn't what is influencing votes. What is influencing votes is what some apolitical and disengaged 24 year old Hispanic construction worker or waitress in Philly sees on TikTok that might make them decide to vote.
