Then I think this whole episode demonstrates the Myth of Religious Violence very well, and what a stronghold it continues to have on people's imaginations. Also, we see how far people are willing to go to jump to conclusions to confirm the myth, and how the myth is used to justify even more conflict.barnhart wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 8:36 pmPlenty of other groups were complicit, I don't know if the Catholics were even the largest operator.Falco Knotwise wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:59 pmI still do not believe it happened, or at least not by evil Jesuits. According to the reports above, there were over 400 Indian boarding schools operating in the 19th and 20th centuries. Of those 89 were operated by the Catholic church, so what is that, about 20%. The majority were directly operated by the government I think.barnhart wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 8:36 pmPlenty of other groups were complicit, I don't know if the Catholics were even the largest operator.Falco Knotwise wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:59 pmI still do not believe it happened, or at least not by evil Jesuits. And, in any event, even the religious schools were operated under the auspices of the government which is the entity that was collecting (sometimes kidnapping) children from Indian villages and reservations and shipping them off the country to boarding schools. It wasn't the nuns who were going around collecting children off reservations.

Right, but the Myth of Religious Violence has served its purpose to make everyone think that any government support for religion results in violence.
In this case, the "colonial state" was the bad guy because it was using religion as its tool.
Keep in mind, I don't believe any of this, anyway. I think the whole thing is fake.
Not saying there was never any abuse, like there probably is in any school system, but nothing to warrant this moral panic. Certainly no "mass graves", or at least as yet there's isn't one iota of proof for it, which hasn't prevented Canada from acting like it's an established fact already.

It’s the result of gov offering valuable incentives for victimhood. Unintended consequences.
Lust for power, legal protections, access to public funds.
https://www.dorchesterreview.ca/blogs/n ... s%20sewage.TWO YEARS AFTER the claim rocked the world that “the remains of 215 children” had been found on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, we know much more than we did at the time.
Probably the most important thing we now know about Kamloops is that 2,000 linear feet of trenches about 3 feet deep lined with clay tiles and running east-west were dug in 1924 as a septic field to dispose of the school’s sewage. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) cannot distinguish between a trench lined with clay tiles and a putative child’s grave. The GPR profile is very similar.
Unfortunately Dr. Sarah Beaulieu, Assistant Professor of Social, Cultural & Media Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley, didn’t know about the 1924 septic field when she did her GPR work at the former residential school as she hadn’t done the necessary archival research beforehand. She thus mistook the old septic field trenches for shallow children’s graves, and the fact that they ran east-west for proof that they were Christian burials.
https://www.foxnews.com/world/dig-at-ca ... orm-reportOne such effort to search for evidence [of mass graves] was undertaken at the Shubenacadie Residential School in Nova Scotia in August 2021. Researchers determined that potential graves found around the school had no connection to the institution and predated the school by about 100 years, according to a CBC report.
And as reported in the video, the 751 graves in Saskatchewan supposed to be those of buried residential school children turned out to be unmarked graves of a community cemetery that wasn't even started until sometime in the 1970s — years after the residential school had closed.

Here's a documentary about the residential schools from 1962 called The Eyes of Children: Life at a Residential School, that some may find interesting.
Of course, some will (naturally) say it's just Catholic propaganda.
Still, I think what is portrayed here is what is today called "abuse" and "cultural genocide:" a Catholic education.

Would you be okay with your children being taken from you and shipped thousands of miles away in order to receive Catholic education?Falco Knotwise wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 3:56 am Here's a documentary about the residential schools from 1962 called The Eyes of Children: Life at a Residential School, that some may find interesting.

^^i appreciate MATT WALSH’s conservative and Catholic pov.Falco:
Really an excellent video temp! I found a few relevant articles: ..
i appreciate that you read and view/listen to materials shared, and respond in informed ways.
i realize not everyone can do anything like that.
Recognizing core clashes between Catholics-EO-Protestants-Anabaptists, it’s well to be aware that Christianity is under attack, i’ll refer to something a formerly active MD member, MrJim, once posted, to paraphrase:Falco Knotwise wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 3:56 am Here's a documentary about the residential schools from 1962 called The Eyes of Children: Life at a Residential School, that some may find interesting.

“Catholics are the primary target, but, all Christians should be aware, if+when they take down Catholicism, the rest will quickly fall.”
That was shocking news to me. Years later, it holds water.
As a protestant with Anabaptist interests, a Christian, it got my attention. i had essentially been raised to ignore+reject Catholicism, without specifics (which i don’t believe is unusual in any faith).
In my view, Christians, by definition, make easy targets.
Turning cheeks, removing logs from eyes, admission of sins, unending forgiveness of enemies, humility, the last shall be first, self-sacrifice, refusing to judge .. a tyrants’ playground!
i’m enjoying reading the various responses in this topic.
(for me) they MOST reflect how much is NOT known regarding how to protect, care for, educate, lead children.
In so many important ways, “we” are in shambles on earth.
My perception is, Canada, with its very different government system, which did/does involve government funds+oversight of gov in churches, is in a worse place with targeting Christianity. lesterb, an Anabaptist leader in western Canada, shared some of his fellowship’s experiences in their quest to keep church+school separate from Canada’s gov; keeping financially independent was central, they were diligent in record-keeping.
In my view, it takes “the will of 10,” to refuse “free” gov funds. It’s so seductive.
i was surprised your video, evidently filmed long ago, was accessible: FRONTIER CENTRE
i wanted to know more about them, they have a number of videos, i found an interesting video on COVID19. i’ll be addng it to the COVID thread. (Near P.723) viewtopic.php?t=2701&start=7220

“All my life,” i’ve been learning about the horrors of Christian missions in history, maybe mostly 1800’s? (my unstudied guess)
i was very empathetic to the (“sacred”) notion of “not forcing your beliefs onto others” ..
THEY LOST ME ..
when obama, sitting president of the U.S., pridefully declared his priority U.S. foreign policy was to press homosexual interests (which has become, “all carnal things”) world-wide.

The issue isn't that these students received a Catholic education. The issue is that in many cases, education was coerced and children were separated from their parents with the intention of weakening family bonds so that the children could be acculturated. That's what makes this cultural genocide.

Which was entirely conducted by government bureaucrats doing what they claimed was in the “best interests of the child”.Szdfan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 8:48 am The issue isn't that these students received a Catholic education. government bureaucrats, now like obama .. biden .. they’re in numbers ..
there could be hope Christianity could not be further blamed .. however .. however .. (cough)
Lots is done under the guise of the Christian label.
The label is alternately flaunted/attacked as deemed convenient in the moment. That’s politics.

P.7:
Not necessarily.3. Why was it ever considered acceptable for residential schools to have its own graveyard.
This alone should be an indication something was amiss.
In our times, good health is the expectation. This has changed drastically in my one lifetime.
For perspective, i was 4-5 when polio vaccines were made available to the general population. Everyday life was perilous.
In addition, i expect schools were adjacent to their sponsoring churches, which were attended by area parishioners?
Even Anabaptist fellowships are known to have adjacent/nearby cemeteries?
This is a good example of how our minds readily change, typically to believe whatever we’re experiencing “has always been.”
Keeping perspective takes dedicated effort.
