Obviously nothing is perfect but have you ever tore apart a house full of DIY home remodels done by people who had no idea what they were doing?
I'd rather know my house was built to code and inspected.

Unless you were as involved in the construction process as some here are saying you should be in the production of your food, you do not know that it was constructed properly.
Then let's look at the last 10 years and ask if the increasing rules and regulations of the last 10 years have helped. Go ahead and look from 2009 - 2019, just so we can exclude that favourite bogeyman, COVID.Sliceitup wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 3:38 pmYour argument is a bit weak. If life expectancy is an indicator of whether rules and regulations are helpful or harmful then they would clearly be helpful. Life expectancy has risen throughout the 20 and 21st centuries. And we’ve had increasingly more food regulations.
Life expectancy had already been dropping before 2020, so no, you can't blame this one on COVID-19.The drop in life expectancy from 2019-2020 was due to Covid19. It was the largest year to year change in 70+ years. You can’t expect people to think that’s tied to food regulations that have been in existence for decades.
Fine. I'll rephrase. I'd rather live in a community and country that makes an effort to establish and enforce building codes for safety and quality.ohio jones wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 4:26 pmUnless you were as involved in the construction process as some here are saying you should be in the production of your food, you do not know that it was constructed properly.
Yeah, we lived in Jordan for a year. You would love the streets, sidewalks and electrical wiringKen wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 5:10 pmFine. I'll rephrase. I have also lived in countries like Guatemala where no such things exist so I know what the alternative is.
Yet that doesn't come just from government regulation, but from a culture which values honesty and integrity and one where builders care about their reputations.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 5:10 pmFine. Are you sure Guatemala has no building codes, inspections, or laws on the books for that? A quick Google search reveals lots of talk (including businesses offering to help you get necessary permits) that such things there do exist.I have also lived in countries like Guatemala where no such things exist so I know what the alternative is.
Oh, there's plenty of fees to do everything, and lots of corruption. So basically you have to pay people off for permission to do anything. But that doesn't mean there is actually a building code that is enforced through inspections.Josh wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 7:28 pmYet that doesn't come just from government regulation, but from a culture which values honesty and integrity and one where builders care about their reputations.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 5:10 pmFine.
