THE 10 SUGGESTIONS / THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
i’ve heard of this “scriptural slight” reference in various ways over years .. here is one young man’s example:

“The 10 Suggestions” / Doug Ford+Kyle Ford / Calvary Chapel / Sweetwater TN

The 10 suggestions / By Doug Ford

Kyle (my oldest son - the evangelist/chemist) wrote these. :)
I thought this was really clever and just too good to slide off the bottom of his blog into obscurity.
So, with his permission, here is a reprint of the Ten Suggestions .

Today I decided that the ten commandments need to be re-written.
After all, those who follow the ten commandments that we have now are only narrow-minded legalists, right?
So, here I present to you the ten commandments for the modern false Christian.

As I wrote these, I realized that most of these silly things that I put in here have been said by prominent "Christians" lately. How sad.

The Ten Suggestions

1: Thou shalt believe in thyself and love thyself with all of thy being.
After all, you're a really good person.
In fact, you're so awesome that I can't wait to bring you to heaven with me. It'd be so lonely here without you.
Please let me bring you to heaven with me. Pretty please?

2: Thou shalt not worship the God of the Bible.
Make up a god in your head that loves everyone no matter what. Give him a big hug!

3: Thou shalt not take the Lord's name.
I mean really, "Christian" is such a narrow-minded term anyway. Let's just discard all these stereotypes and labels.
We're all on the same spiritual journey anyway.

4: Honor the Sabbath by attending a church whenever you feel like it.
Only attend a church that can keep you entertained.
Starbucks, loud music, and relevant preaching (ie. not from the Bible) are a must.

5: Honor thy Father and Mother; as long as they give you everything you want.

6: Thou shalt not kill anyone who is not an inconvenient child.
You shouldn't be punished with a baby for one little mistake.
After all, it's your body.
Who am I to tell you what to do with your body?

7: Thou shalt not commit adultery and get caught.
Actually, it's best to just sleep around or live with someone and never get married.
If you are unfortunate enough to be married already, get a divorce.
Everybody's doing it!

8: Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt lobby for government programs which forces others to give money to the poor instead of making a donation yourself.

9: Thou shalt not lie for any reason
other than to get yourself out of trouble, make yourself look better, or get ahead at work.
Actually, it's fine to lie as long as you come up with some way to justify it.
Still, you have my permission to get morally outraged when someone lies to you.

10: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's
super sweet 30'' high resolution plasma TV with entertainment system and surround sound that could knock your pants off.
Oh baby, you hook up a playstation 3 to that puppy and go all night. There's no end to the fun!

Wait, what was I saying? :-|

GAMEO / Sabbatarian Anabaptists
https://gameo.org/index.php?title=Sabba ... nabaptists
.. In a letter to the Swiss Brethren (wrongly dated 1531?) Pilgram Marpeck discusses the Ten Commandments
and goes into some detail in his discussion of the third commandment. He rejects any legalistic application of this commandment,
and concludes by saying,

“That is in short against those who wish to reinstitute the physical Sabbath.
Jesus Christ is Lord over all ceremonial laws of the Old and New Testament"
(Kunstbuch, fol. 46b, 38b).
i’m adding this to reflect how the 10 Commandments are not abandoned in the NT.

Ken wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 3:19 pm Is pedophilia a sin? The Bible never explicitly says so that I am aware of. Yet I would argue that it is among the most horrible of sins. Because sexualization of children and sex abuse of children is horribly damaging and injurious to others and can ruin lives for a lifetime. We have to apply our human reasoning to a behavior that isn’t explicitly forbidden in the Bible.
The Bible clearly says in multiple places that sexual immorality (πορνεία, KJV fornication) is sin. How is pedophilia not included in that?

You apparently concede that gluttony is sin. I could question if overeating at a church potluck is a sin. The Bible never explicitly says so that I am aware of.

If the broad category is condemned, it is not necessary to explicitly name every subcategory; in fact, it is better not to, as something will inevitably be left out that will be used as a loophole.
What is sexual immorality? And what is fornication? Is it holding hands or hugging? Kissing on the cheek? Kissing on the lips? Kissing elsewhere? Being aroused or simply attracted by a woman’s perfume or ankle? Being aroused or simply attracted by a man’s hands or chest? What about cuddling with clothes on? Cuddling with clothes partially off? What is the line between affection and fornication? Can you fornicate without actually having sex? When do any of these things become immoral?

And do the nature of any of those things change if you do them with a child instead of another adult?

My point is that context is important, intent is important, and you have to look to your heart and mind and conscience which may in turn be guided by the Holy Spirit to discern right from wrong. Not simply a prescriptive list from the Bible.

In another thread there is a discussion about groups that forbid the playing of musical instruments. Is that a sin? Can it be? Maybe. But explain it to me, don’t just cite some chapter and verse that you might interpret in a specific way. Make the case. God gave us the ability to reason and expects us to use it.

From that perspective, what is promiscuity, since you said that's definitely sinful.

Maybe so. I think there are times that it would be better to apply spiritual judgement to behavior that isn't explicitly forbidden in the Bible.

This is one document that has attempted to answer these questions, but the author is a mere piker in the face of an enlightened man posing the questions above.

If you are trying to see just how close you can get to the line, you're asking the wrong questions. Some of these questions are more useful, questions about the difference between lust, attraction, and just noticing beauty, but that's probably for another thread.

Better questions: What is holiness? And what does it look like to live a life devoted to God and to the Kingdom of God? What does the Bible tell us about God's plan for marriage and sexuality and the human body?

There are of course in scripture some indications of things that are sexually immoral. But instead of trying to define the boundaries of sexual immorality, let's ask instead what sexual morality is. For this, we have the words of Jesus:
Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
When sexual morality is established, sexual immorality (anything else) becomes clear.

We have a guide that if we are born again lives within us and is ready to instruct us. Ask Him. I believe those who live intune with the Holy Spirit can and will know what is sin. I believe a major problem is a disregard for Holy Spirit guidance and not being attentive to that 'still small voice' . Psalm 25:8&9 -

Good and upright is the Lord;
therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
He guides the humble in what is right
    and teaches them his way.
