What happened to Crimea after 2014?
Russia can’t fix what it has done here…

There are two brave journalists left in Mariupol- They are from the Associated Press. Here is there stunning account. It is very difficult to read at the heart level, but I think it’s one of the most important pieces written on what’s going on among the people in the region:

https://apnews.com/article/708cb8f4a171 ... 8d090e38e3
Interesting that the article completely fail to mention who in Ukrainian military is trying to hold Mariupol. Why Would Russia want to expend this many resources in Mariupol? What's the benefit?
I'm glad you read the article nett...thank you. If only the world would learn to turn the other cheek. :(

Not sure what you're implying, but I read the whole thing.

Dan, the AP could have written the EXACT same article about violence, suffering, and death in Donestk both before and after the Russian invasion, but they didn't, and you didn't care. Do you not see a problem with letting the media control your emotions like this?

By that standard, nobody could mourn violence, suffering, and death anywhere, anytime because there's always something else going on that could be whatabouted to dismiss it.

i was able to view it. not sure why. it was brief:
Feb 26 (Reuters) - Russian shelling killed 19 civilians and incjured 73 more on Saturday in Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, the Interfax news agency reported citing regional administration.

"On February 26, as a result of Russian shelling, 19 civilians were killed, 73 people were injured," Interfax quoted Pavel Kirilenko as saying on social media.
i agree with your overall point, tho.

i don’t see it as whataboutism. i see it as a plea to not being sucked in, actively or passively to war mongering.
a plea to not presume, “we” would never do that! esp not for petty, selfish reasons!

Is there a particular reason it's more important to care about the Russian shelling of Donestk more than their shelling of Mariupol?

I may be misunderstanding the purpose of your question, but Russia cannot control the land connection between Crimea and Russia w/o controlling Mariupol. (And Melitopol, for that matter.)
[In the beginning of the invasion I thought that the forces coming down south out of Belarus toward Kyiv were no more than a diversion - that the primary goal was to gain control of this "land bridge". Then later I wondered if V. Putin is attempting to control Kyiv for symbolic reasons, as the capitol of a restored Kyivan Rus.]

I think that’s right. One can respond to the question, “Why don’t you care about Donetsk?” with “why don’t you care about Grozny or Aleppo?”

Everyone completely missed my point. This thread is absolutely full of emotional and sensational anger, mourning and everything in between. The only reason you all care this much, is the media whipped you up into it. There are LOT of really bad things going on in the world. Choosing to let the media whip you up into a frenzy over specific events is a really bad idea for Christian.

You cannot possibly consciously perceive and then grief everything bad going on in the world. I believe it's important to approach these situations with caution, and not allow your emotions to be manipulated. if you know people who are personally affected, then by all mean mourn with them, help out if you can etc. but most of this is just virtue signaling and posturing, I haven't seen a single 1st hand report on this forum, and I've seen maybe two 2nd person reports, anything beyond that is essentially "rumors of wars" to me.

Also the charge of whataboutism is a great way to admit hypocrisy. I will accept your admission.
