our brethren there are at the border with Poland, trying to get out. Rumour has it they want to force all males age 18-60 into the military to go fight. The lines at the border are huge and people have been waiting over 24 hours.

Why would a “free”, “democratic” people not let its own people leave?

Indeed. (My own home country also wouldn’t let me leave, so I am stuck not being able to go back there.)
