Shooting rockets at children sounds like exactly the kind of thing the US practiced in Afghanistan....Soloist wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2022 11:05 pmAnd the USA has a long track record of war crimes... Who writes the record of Russian war crimes? Who writes the records of USA war crimes?Bootstrap wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2022 9:21 pmRussia has a long track record of war crimes, though. Do you believe they have suddenly turned over a new leaf?Soloist wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2022 4:58 pm One thing to remember as the propaganda machine churns out stuff, war crimes are the easiest thing to make up and almost impossible to dispute. Our country has every reason to make it up and very little compulsion to accurately report if Russia is waging a "civilized war".
Why the urge to proclaim Russian innocence? On a very different scale than most countries. When do you believe taking over your neighbor by military force is justified? What means do you consider legitimate for doing so? If they do engage in war crimes, do you want to be involved in a coverup for them? What are you doing to avoid that?
Russia is not inncocent. Their argument against neo-nazi's is weak at best... clearly not their primary goal. My point is people posting dramatic things such as, "here is Russia shooting children with rockets" is propaganda. No different then Pres Obama's red line suddenly being met right after he stated it in Syria.

Why would a “free”, “democratic” people not let its own people leave?

I have to agree. It was only until two months ago citizens weren’t allowed to claim another citizenship eg, Hungarians of descent. I highly doubt many had a chance to claim it before now and as such are stuck. They were previously promised non-combatant roles, but with war happening it could change.Josh wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 8:23 amKarstan78 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 7:16 am It’s official from this morning, only women, children, the elderly and those with foreign citizenship can leave.

https://444.hu/2022/02/25/magyar-utleve ... opecsetjukour brethren there are at the border with Poland, trying to get out. Rumour has it they want to force all males age 18-60 into the military to go fight. The lines at the border are huge and people have been waiting over 24 hours.

Eta, we’re seeing pictures from separated families unable to leave Ukraine together.

The cost is high and us over in America tend to forget that other countries aren't as friendly to people not wanting to fight in the military. I spoke to a man who spent 9 years in prison due to not fighting, I believe he was from one of these former Soviet nations.

Russia also has mandatory universal conscription. In fact this is why Russian Mennonites left what is now the Ukraine in the 1870s.

My heart goes out to all civilians whose existence and life is threatened but in particular our Ukrainian brethren. I hope none of them is forced to take up arms against their will. I hope the European countries will offer generous hospitality to the refugees. May God have mercy on them.Karstan78 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2022 9:58 am We’ve just heard from family members of those in Ukraine that men are already being rounded up and drafted from 18-60 years and no males are allowed to leave the country. Most of our churches are at the borders of Romania and Hungary, weve Heard- it’s been a nightmare to contact family there.

Re: Russia Invades Ukraine 2022
Actually, it was a progression of loss of the promised "forever" exemption. There was some talk about full military involvement by representatives of the Czar in the 1860's already, but that never happened. First it was to serve in the forestry service, which was accepted by most of the Mennonites. Then it was the medical corp, which was also acceptable to most. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I am aware, there was never any requirement for full military combat service under the Czarist government (for those previously exempted, as were all Mennonites). But it is true that the threat of this was the reason for these initial immigrations.
