Well, I think I do have more than one hammer. Not everything is about facts. But here's my go-to toolbox for this kind of thing: Remember that they use outrage to manipulate us. Learn what propaganda feels like, the emotions they trigger to make it engaging. Calm down. Remember where to look for the Kingdom of God. Remember where to look for facts. Learn what propaganda feels like, what makes it so addictive, why it is so effective at forming group opinions, how it makes people so sure they know the answers even when they don't have a basic grasp of the facts. Remember that it takes time for the truth to emerge, be patient. I suspect that's the basic toolbox that I use.Falco Underhill wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 2:22 pmWhen all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.
It's not just my research background. I also lived in Berlin before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I've seen a lot of East German propaganda on the news. I've seen historical Nazi propaganda films and speeches. I've seen how outrage can be targeted to manipulate people. I've talked to Christians who fell for it. I've visited Bonhoeffer's cell, he did not fall for it, he died as a result.
So I think it's important for Christians to learn what propaganda feels like, what makes it so addictive, why it is so effective at forming group opinions, how it makes people so sure they know the answers even when they don't have a basic grasp of the facts.
I'm not saying our political factions are like the Nazis, but they use the same techniques. And we do see people watching hours of video, spreading what they say without doing even basic fact checking, broadcasting this to their friends. It's addictive. In some circles, it's a big part of what everyday conversation is about. It's very alienating to those who have not red-pilled. It's also very worldly.
The Kingdom of God is about other things.

I really don't think I do. But I do think people who are trying to push outrage get outraged at my posts. I am mostly trying to defang outrage so we can step back and discern.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
This is true. It is also the first death due to Covid-19 vaccines in the State of Washington. This seems to be a very rare side effect, and Covid-19 vaccines are saving a lot of lives.GaryK wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 2:05 pmhttps://www.westernjournal.com/young-mo ... manualpostAn obituary that said a Washington state woman died after she was forced to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in August apparently has been confirmed, as state health officials finally acknowledged on Tuesday that the shot killed a woman in the Seattle area.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
She wasn’t actually forced to take the vaccine. She wanted to keep volunteering as a “room mother” in her child’s elementary classroom and took the vaccine in order to keep doing that. Unfortunately she decided to take the J&J one-shot vaccine which is the one already linked to rare clotting in younger women and this was one of those rare cases. One has to deliberately search out the J&J vaccine as it isn’t the one normally given and comes with a warning to women under 50 of possible rare side effects.Bootstrap wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 3:54 pmThis is true. Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
You seem to have missed the point. She didn't want to take a vaccine but in order to keep doing what she had been doing, she was required to get a vaccine. This family suffered a tragic loss and it was directly linked to a vaccine mandate.Bootstrap wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 3:54 pmThis is true. Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
So the woman is to blame. Got it. This case has nothing to do with a vaccine mandate???Ken wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 4:03 pmShe wasn’t actually forced to take the vaccine. Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
No, it was an extremely unfortunate and extremely rare but known side effect. There is nothing in life that is risk-free. The risks of vaccine side-effects are many orders of magnitude lower than the risk of the disease itself. She also risked her life every time she got into her car to drive to her kid’s school. When your sample size is tens or hundreds of millions of people you can find incidences of extremely rare events happening. She was the 4th person to die in the US from vaccine side effects compared to over 700,000 who have died from the disease itself. The number of children orphaned from Covid is many thousands of times higher than the number orphaned due to vaccine side effects. But they are all tragic.GaryK wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 4:55 pmSo the woman is to blame. Got it.
