Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
That's an interesting chart. Just from looking at the graph, it looks like just under a quarter of covid cases in Ontario are among the fully vaccinated; a smaller percentage yet among those who are hospitalized; and a smaller percentage still among those admitted ICUs.silentreader wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 4:55 pm https://covid-19.ontario.ca/data?utm_so ... m=referral

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
They have only been publishing that data for about 2 weeks, I think. Breakthrough cases among fully "vaccinated" have been bouncing between 17% and 25% of new cases with the average between 20% and 21%. If I understand it correctly, ICU patients are not included in the hospitalized patient data. So total hospitalized is actually hospitalized + ICU.mike wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 5:00 pmThat's an interesting chart. Question that arises in my mind, Were these "vaccinated" people tested because they were symptomatic?
If, as is claimed, "vaccinated" infected people are usually asymptomatic, how many more people are out there with breakthrough infections and are unaware and are not being tested?

Privilege check please.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 2:58 pmI would rather catch Covid as a vaccinated person in Israel than as an unvaccinated person in say...Equatorial Guinea where they probably have plenty of Ivermectin available but little else in the way of modern medicine.nett wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 2:54 pmSo those African countries can achieve Israel's resounding success?Ken wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 2:40 pm
Ivermectin is primarily used to treat parasites, including lice, scabies, river blindness, and a whole assortment of intestinal worms. Those are all far more prevalent in Africa than any place else in the world. So it would be shocking if Africa wasn't a huge consumer of Ivermectin.
As for using it to treat Covid? Perhaps what is really happening is that people across the developing world are being forced to resort to alternative therapies because they have been unable to procure sufficient quantities of vaccine to immunize their populations. I expect that if you interviewed doctors and public health officials in every African country and gave them a choice between a supply of vaccine sufficient to treat their entire population, or a supply of Ivermectin to treat their entire population the answer would be deafening and unanimous.![]()

But that's just me I guess.
Can't you just be happy that They're not experiencing an outbreak despite their supposedly primitive medical system?

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
The delta variant is vaccine resistant, but natural immunity is very strong against it. Considering how little infrastructure these countries have to check incoming visitors for disease, it's a virtual certainty that delta has made it's way there, it just hasn't spread, because people are immune by now.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 3:16 pmIt probably isn't right now. But with a vaccination rate of 0.6% they are probably extremely vulnerable to a delta variant outbreak if someone carries it into the country.GaryK wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 3:04 pmI don't disagree about the limited health care and reporting structures in these countries. My point is that unlike Ebola, which was all over Liberian news while it was ravaging the country, Covid has not been. Some mentions here and there during the course of the pandemic but nothing like Ebola news. This makes me believe that Liberia is not experiencing a lot of sickness and death related to Covid.Dan Z wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 2:53 pm
I think part of the answer is that places like Libera and Haiti have very undeveloped health systems. Limited health care and reporting structures, especially in the rural areas, are likely to result in a vast undercount. Some studies surmised that is what was happening in places like India as well. comparing western developed nations to undeveloped countries is not likely an apples-to-apples comparison.

Ken, I'm curious if will you be taking your soon-to-be government mandated twice-per-day COVID pill?
Again I ask, where will you draw the line?

I'm not sure what kind of web site you are pointing to there, it's got weird pop-ups and malware on it.nett wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 7:25 pm https://nationalfile.com/pfizer-is-now- ... -vaccines/

But yes, Pfizer is developing and testing a 2x a day Covid antiviral therapy as is Mercx, Shionogi (Japanese pharma giant) and others. They are testing a twice daily 5-day treatment regimen. It would just join remdesivir, monoclonal antibodies, hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, and a bunch of others as THERAPIES to treat people who already have Covid. Dozens of pharmaceutical companies are spending billions trying to develop anti-viral therapies for Covid. This is the least surprising development in the world frankly. What else would they be doing. Do you think this is a bad thing?
What the article you cited does is deliberately take the statement by Pfizer out of context. What Pfizer actually said was that a combination of both vaccines and therapeutics are necessary to fight the pandemic. Not that individual people need to take both of them at the same time, or that their Covid anti-viral therapy needs to be combined with the vaccines to be effective.
This is exactly the same thing that every scientist and public health official around the world is also saying. Namely, that there is no one single magic bullet that will defeat this disease. In order to beat Covid we need both PREVENTIONS (vaccines, distancing, masking etc.) AND CURES (therapeutics to treat the disease).
So yes, if I end up catching Covid despite having been vaccinated, and it turns out to be a serious case and not the normal mild case that most vaccinated people get, then I will happily and willingly take whatever therapy my doctors think is currently the best and most effective treatment for my circumstances. If that is a Pfizer-branded anti-viral pill then fine. If it is remdesivir or monoclonal antibodies, then fine. If it is ivermectin, then fine. If it is Merck's new anti-viral therapy, then fine. If it is something even newer that we don't know about yet then fine.
I'm not sure why you think there is something scandalous or untoward about the fact that Pfizer is also developing an anti-viral therapy in addition to their vaccines. They are a big pharmaceutical company with tremendous expertise in anti-virals. What else would they do? This is not even anything new. Pfizer announced phase-1 trials back in March: https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-relea ... -antiviral

Of course I'm happy that much of sub-Saharan Africa has been spared the worst of Covid so far (outside of South Africa). But I also know every country in Africa is begging for more access to the vaccine.nett wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 5:25 pmPrivilege check please.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
So Africa has not suffered COVID outbreaks like the western world has. What you take away from that is that we need to "save" Africa with our magical vaccine (that don't work).Ken wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 8:14 pmOf course I'm happy that much of sub-Saharan Africa has been spared the worst of Covid so far (outside of South Africa). I believe the CRT term for that would be a "white savior complex"
As the all-knowing white west, it would be far too humiliating to try to figure out if there is something they are doing or some environmental reason why they are doing so much better. Better to just pretend they "need" us as always.
