Mods shouldn't remove posts that they disagree with.
But they should curate the forums and remove posts that violate the established community standards for this forum. I assume they exist somewhere but I couldn't find them in the 30 seconds I poked around the FAQ. If they don't exist then perhaps some agreed-to community standards should exist.
Should MennoNet remove posts the Mods disagree with?

MennoNet has community standards; it’s just that people like Ken haven’t been able to control what they are yet.

Probably. Can you point to them?ken_sylvania wrote:Didn't you have to agree to some terms of use when you signed up?Ken wrote:You are asking the wrong question.

I'm not sure why you are trying to call me out. I have never once in public or private suggested that anyone's post here be censored or removed. Nor have I ever complained in public or private when on infrequent occasion one of mine gets sent to the briarpatch.Josh wrote:MennoNet has community standards; it’s just that people like Ken haven’t been able to control what they are yet.
All I am doing is suggesting that the standard for removal should be violation of community standards, not whether a moderator disagrees with the post.

Practically all conservative Mennonite churches have "agreed-to community standards" and curate their membership rolls based on violations thereof. Much time and effort has been employed in attacking and defending the concept; I've heard countless sermons (mostly pro) and discussions (mostly con) on the subject. I would have expected you to argue the other side, actually. Maybe you think more like a conservative Mennonite than you think.Ken wrote:But they should curate the forums and remove posts that violate the established community standards for this forum. The FAQ is just generic phpBB stuff. The basic ground rules for MN are here. We do expect y'all not to be too disagreeable, and most of the time y'all do a reasonably good job of that, all things considered.
But the bottom line is, this is not a democracy, it's a somewhat-benevolent dictatorship janitorship.

There you go. That is more or less what I expected. I just couldn't find the ground rules in the FAQ and didn't know where to look. I have no problem with your ground rules. They seem appropriate. I would assume everyone understands that the "community standards" for membership in a conservative Mennonite church would be completely different from the "community standards" used for a free-ranging internet forum. Maybe that wasn't the right term but I think it is the same one used by places like Facebook. Call them ground rules instead if you want.ohio jones wrote:Practically all conservative Mennonite churches have "agreed-to community standards" and curate their membership rolls based on violations thereof. I'm not objecting to ground rules at all. I think they are appropriate and I have seen unmoderated forums quickly descend into filth. I was only nit-picking with the wordage of the subject of this post which I don't think was what you meant to say anyway. You are obviously looking to remove posts that violate the ground rules, not that you might disagree with.

No. Because by the time it happened, they had each been given numerous warnings, and there was memorable drama in the process. Not all wanted them blocked; some definitely did.queserasera_2 wrote:Is it weird that I remember who they were?Robert wrote:Twice when we were MennoDiscuss, but I ban people daily. i understand and accept the decisions, but, i miss them and wish for a better day for them.
On MD (i believe) blocking was not necessarily forever.
if the person wanted to be accepted, he/she could contact admin to attempt to work things out.
And, blocked or not, quite a lot of attempts to minister privately go on. Which i admire.
Being blocked on this forum doesn’t mean you aren’t intelligent or interesting, or even fascinating.
it just means you’re not abiding by basic requirements to participate.

Perhaps another option could be to remove OJ if he fails to mantain the PAW metric (Pun a Week)Robert wrote:You know, this was tongue in cheek and everyone got all serious. Laugh a little people.
