Re: Dank Kingdom Christian Memes
i had no idea DKCM existed before reading this thread. (not a bad place to be.)
i enjoy many memes, many are too “out there,” some are downright vulgar.
there’s a lot of vulgar in this world. for too many, “vulgar” and vile are lucrative careers, for grown adults, many posing as “hep young fraternity brothers” (david letterman is one, FINALLY retired) but there are many, including kathy griffin, whose career was built on vile+offensive.
that style of cruel and snarky “comedy” is popular.
i think of it as a peter pan mentality, grown men (and women) proclaiming, “i’ll never grow up!” - and, “you can’t make me!” to repeat, for some, the monetary rewards are great. they aren’t messin’ around. so, no matter damage done, for $$$, they aren’t going away. entertainers aren’t exactly memes, but, a lot of it ends up in memes. (i’m not amused by wealthy grandpa-aged men pretending they’re dopey “animal house” characters - for life.)
this is part of why i ended tv in 2016.
History. Richard Dawkins. hmm.
i think of them as “graphics,” or maybe some other description.
if they are memes, they are in the clear minority. for example: (oops. can’t find it.)
it is a graphic of Jesus under great duress carrying His cross, with the words,
“I did this because all lives matter.”
To me, this is Truth. Truth for all, offered by Jesus Christ. i can’t describe this as a meme.

Meme, unit of cultural information spread by imitation.
The term meme (from the Greek mimema, meaning “imitated”) was introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work The Selfish Gene.
Yes. However, i’m not sure these can be defined as memes... annkat wrote:

Re: Dank Kingdom Christian Memes
To me, the Facebook group looks a lot like a bunch of people creating first drafts of things, some good, some bad, most not yet great, and learning how to express themselves, improving some of the better ideas to come up with some good ones. Some of the memes are really good, most are not. That's probably true of MennoNet posts too, and perhaps of blog posts. Memes are a very effective form of communication. If we want to break through the noise, maybe having a few people get really good at solidly Christian memes is a good thing. That might take some practice. There might be plenty of mistakes along the way. That's what learning to do something looks like.
I hope this is not the only thing going on in the lives of the people creating these memes. I imagine they have a lot more going on. I'm guessing the people in the Facebook group would agree that some are better than others. I'd like to see more editorial discussion in that Facebook group - what memes are helpful, what memes teach basic Bible truths, what memes just tear people down, what memes helpfully point out areas of hypocrisy to avoid without pointing fingers at specific people ...
Regardless, this kind of humor might not make sense to people who just don't appreciate it. On the other hand, maybe we could all be a little less serious about ourselves and be willing to laugh at ourselves sometimes?

It's always hard to appreciate humor when it has a malicious edge. However, being able to laugh at ourselves is, I think, one of the ingredients of a healthy frame of mind.Bootstrap wrote:Regardless, this kind of humor might not make sense to people who just don't appreciate it. Like any form of communication, it's probably a good idea to think about who it is aimed at and how you want them to respond. Poking fun at people who annoy you so other people will laugh at them is not a good goal. Pointing out obvious flaws in some of the things we fine religious people are saying to each other is a very good goal. Pointing out inconsistencies that might indicate divided loyalties is a particularly good goal if it helps us invest our identity in Jesus and put all our eggs in one basket.mike wrote:It's always hard to appreciate humor when it has a malicious edge. I don't know the Dank people. I hope they have a sense of humor themselves. Looking at the memes, some of them are poking fun at themselves as they create these memes, which makes me suspect they probably do.
And if the memes offend some people, that doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't Christlike. Jesus said a lot of short pithy things that got yelps from the Pharisees. But offending for the sake of offending is not Christlike at all, and there's always a danger of self-righteousness for all of us.

Re: Dank Kingdom Christian Memes
Some people interpret the page through what they observe about the admins outside that page/group. I'm not scared of the page, I even baited them recently after one of my FB posts "inspired" a meme. I laughed at them and moved on. The page has a certain element that neuters them from having much importance.
As for the discussion on this thread... a lot of it was barking up the wrong tree. The focus was largely on a specific tree, and not the forest of which the tree was part of. I saw some efforts to get people to back up and look at the forest, but the attention was quickly refocused on a specific tree. (BTW, technically speaking, that was a brilliant strategy, whether intended or not.) But efforts to back up and see the forest are wise and ultimately, helpful.

This thread is reminding me of times when the church I went to called people into the council room one by one to get hear the voices about stuff hanging from rearview mirrors.
Dear me, people, do we not have bigger fish to fry?
