Personally I laugh often.
But poking fun at others, especially not directly to them comes across as self-righteous to me... I don't think Christ possessed a self-righteous attitude.
MennoNet comes across as 1000% more self righteous to me than any meme I’ve seen. This issue is boiling down to simply personal preference, bias, and attitude more than anything truly Scriptual. I understand you’re a convert but ask yourself if so much offense is truly based in Truth or is it based in your desire to assimilate into a culture and feel the need to be repulsed by anything not a part of it. Hate memes, I don’t care, but just because you hate them does not make them unChristlike.
I probably should be more careful... Maybe I like pushing buttons as much as DKCM does?!
Growing up as a boy at family gatherings my grandfather would start in on something very controversial and be saying things where aunts and uncles would be yelling and storming out. Then finally about midnight or after he'd down his last bit of whiskey, stroll towards the door, turn back and casually say, "I was only joking.". And with a wink and a smile he'd head home laughing. He sure made people consider. Why are so many that don't post here making such a fuss that memes are so important?

In all honesty I do want to meme this :-| it strikes me as funny but yet so, so sad. How low have we set the bar? God help us...
I don’t “meme” this. Instead, I actually went and did something about it.

Empty words and funny pictures on the Internet might feel good, but they don’t accomplish anything.
And then, there are some of us, like the Old Testament prophets, who do not believe words and images issued to an adulterous people are "empty," and who, like Jeremiah, if we kept our silence, would find the unspoken words of Yahweh burning through our bowels. Furthermore, most people I know who feel that way are also doing much beyond "merely" speaking.

Let's celebrate others who seek to do God's work with the same objectives we have, and not demand that they all use our favored methods.

It's funny how one can be looking for something totally different and find what they need - I found this from a few years back:
Sunbeam wrote:I see passive aggressiveness on-line as being covert snark or sarcasm, often referring to someone or a group of people instead of being directly addressed. But not always.
Used at times to deliver a barb without becoming a target. Or if the deliverer of the barb is called out, it was nebulous enough that he can pop up with an innocent face and say, "Who? Me??"

To balance that analysis, I also believe that some people are wont to cry "Passive-aggressive!!" where none at all exists.

Both passive aggressiveness and calling people passive aggressive, exists the most where charity is thinnest.

Let it go. If someone is being covertly ugly, move on. Do not get caught up in the drama of name calling or whining about being treated poorly. It is small. Do not be small.

This is precisely why I dropped out of that Facebook group just a few days after being invited into it. As I saw it it was mostly self-righteous put-downs and I was quite surprised at what I saw coming from some of the people posting there. But at least it was honest - and it exposed the character and hearts of some people (and groups of people) of whom I thought better.

I was curious about the dank. Not sure if google helped or not.

I like humorous memes. I think it is quite obvious that DKCM enjoys sticking the Mennonites occasionally along with other targets. I don't really expect them to do otherwise, at least the people involved in DKCM that I know. These messages are pretty consistent with how I understand these people to be and think and laugh. Recently, I was shown a meme about Mennonite bishops and face coverings. I could easily see that it was satire. However, someone else felt like it was in poor humor and taste, and did not realize immediately that it was satire, and doesn't like satire anyway.
I don't get most of the pop culture characters and scenes used in these memes, most of the time I just see a person/picture. I can see why someone who is familiar with that picture in its original context would see something there that I do not.

This one seems quite appropriate:
Slang. (of an Internet meme) passé or clichéd; out of touch; having missed the cultural Zeitgeist.

annkat wrote:You’re not a topic of discussion. One person brought you up, that they thought you had gotten remarried. That was it. We’re all well aware of your position on D&R. The fact that you’re so set on being secretive is strange, and almost implies some kind of shame, like you know people will not take you as seriously or see you as as righteous, or maybe not feel so intimidated by you, if they knew if you had gotten remarried. I ask that you reflect on this; if you feel you have a solid scriptural interpretation on the issue, I truly respect that. But don’t hide it when you put it in practice.
MennoNet hasn’t typically been a forum for wedding announcements or for a lot of sharing of personal information. I remain in contact with people personally whom I talk to privately. I don’t know who other people are and don’t demand personal information from them either.

One of the people I personally shared with is jahertzler, another is Wayne in Maine, and another is Bootstrap. Of course, if anyone would like to discourse with me, I’m open to talk.
I messaged you once to discuss foster care, as my husband and I are becoming foster parents, and never got a response from you. That led me to think you really have no interest in any discussion that doesn’t involve some kind of debate.
I’m sorry I missed your message - I do my best to stay on top of personal messages. Sometimes someone sends me an email and it gets lost in a spam filter instead.

Thanks Wayne. That honesty is one thing I am grateful for in all this.

I feel a little the same way. Of course you can meme that, like I did on DKCM the other day...

As a conservative Mennonite, I do feel like some of the posts on DKCM are put-downs, but then so do some of the posts on MennoNet. If I couldn't take any ribbing or didn't have any sense of humor I wouldn't be here, or there either. I'm there, and here, because I like seeing what other people think who may not share my perspective. It does help if the people doing the put-downs can take ribbing, sarcasm, criticism, and mild forms of mockery directed at themselves in good humor as well - they're good at dishing it out, hopefully they can take it as well.

I have noticed that memes make it really easy to present logical fallacies such as false dichotomies and straw man situations, and you don't really get called out on it. It's kind of a fun experiment.
