There's a 6 quart Immergood with an electric motor here:

They are using the White Mountain Chinese-made motors. According to the web site they are trying to design their own better motors. You can always rig up a hand-crank model with a motor. Easiest way to do it is just mount an electric motor on a plank and run it off a belt with the appropriate sized pulleys to give you the correct RPMs. You probably want about 60 rpm give or take.

Ken,

I feel the same way about Chinese produced “face masks” (which are useless for medical purposes) that you do about Chinese produced ice cream motors and ice cream makers.

I have no doubt that Chinese factories could produce the worlds best ice cream maker machined out of titanium that would last 2,000 years.

The problem isn't Chinese manufacture per-se. It is American companies who source the cheapest possible disposable junk from China from the cheapest possible factory with the cheapest possible parts. The Chinese know how to make quality stuff. American companies don't buy it. It is the global race for the bottom that is international capitalism. If not China they would just buy it from Bangladesh or Haiti.

As for face masks. The Chinese are the world's largest suppliers of medical PPE and it is what is used in most hospitals in the US. They produce it to all the relevant US or Euro standards based on whatever market they are selling to. Do you have some reason to believe that the masks made by the mainstream Chinese manufacturers are defective? Because my wife uses Chinese masks and PPE every single day at Kaiser Permanente. I'm not talking about fly-by-night counterfeit stuff from fly-by-night companies that exist both here and in China. But products from the mainstream large companies?

Yes, let's call a truce in the Battle of White Mountain and scream for one of the finer things in life instead. Made with the best homemade ice cream maker and served on the best china.

I'm curious to hear if anyone has seen and used these new Amish-made machines from Lancaster County and if they are as good as advertised. Probably something a few families could go in on together because how often do you make ice cream anyway? Or maybe buy one for a church and let people check it out.

According to their 3 year old blog post yes. Now they have their own motors made here in the US as I understand it.

At our church, families may own an expensive machine or appliance but they put it to use for church gatherings as well. One family has a massive smoker/grill that is mounted on a trailer. They bring it for the church picnics. No one has an ice cream machine yet but I wouldn't mind having one of those electric or "hit and miss" ice cream machines that make 20 quarts a go. If I had the dosh.

We bought a White Mountain ice cream freezer some years ago (at the "61 Surplus", a store here in Berlin that gets in stuff that has been returned or with damaged boxes, etc., and all proceeds go various ministry projects, mostly for orphans and trafficing victims). Didn't know that their manufacturing had been moved to China or the whole company bought out by someone there. Anyway, the gear box made more noise than I thought normal right from the start, and it didn't last long before it had shelled out everything inside. The motor was fine, but the gears were chipped up, and the shaft races (which had no bushings pressed in) were all chewed up, too. Later we heard that Keim Lumber (Charm, OH) had after-market motor sets that were made in the US. I was a bit skeptical still, but we bought one, and it has been fine ever since. If it had been up to me, I would have wanted the crank model, because that's what we had at home growing up, and the motor turns what was a family time with my Dad & brothers (taking turns sitting on the quilt which covered the tub top, to hold it down while Dad or one of the older brothers cranked) into a noisy obnoxiousism (There. I made up a new word, I think.). But my wife would not have any of that cranking business. There is a Amish-owned business somewhere here, Baltic, maybe, that manufactures hand-crank models. When I would in powder-coating, we used to paint the crank units for them.

When we lived in Waco TX we would go out to visit the Homestead Heritage folks every Thanksgiving when the kids were young and they had their big annual fair. They are kind of a quasi-Amish or CA type stand-alone group that does a lot of alternative agriculture type projects. They produce cheese, beef, woodcrafts, and do a business where they disassemble, move, and restore old barns. https://www.homesteadheritage.com/

Anyway they would run a couple of those big 20 quart machines non-stop during their fair and probably sold thousands of dollars of ice cream per day. The most popular flavor was sorghum. I always meant to find a good recipe for sorghum ice cream to make at home, but never got around to it. Anyone have one?
