Seriously the way it started was in the mid-late 1200s Pope Gregory X mandated that Cardinals be locked in a room during papal elections to block secular political lobbyists and other influences. No internet or phones in those days so to let the faithful know about their progress, when the ballots were burned, wet straw would be added to produce a white smoke if a pope had been elected. Two votes are cast each day until one is elected. Plenty of prayers and discussions between votes. It’s not perfect but only God is perfect so...
