This is a widespread problem throughout the third world, and is part of the reason I'm basically opposed to foreign "aid" that comes in the form of Western countries and NGOs dumping large amounts of money into "development" or "assistance" projects in poorer countries. It's like a magnet for wicked, exploitative people to go and work as the staff, alongside very sincere people who want to help, but end being duped for evil ends.

However, I wouldn't call this "white privilege". A black American, or Hispanic, or Asian, or what have you could pull off the same thing - and indeed such abuses have also happened. I don't see CAM as having a race problem; they have a problem where they built an institution that ended up subverted by a very small number of evil people.
White privilege or 'first world privilege"

What happened is that CAM sent a known child molester to Haiti to run a school for orphans, when I seriously doubt they would have hired the same individual to run a school for their own children or grandchildren back in Ohio. Unless you REALLY think that the CAM administrators who "rehabilitated Jeriah Mast would have been fine with hiring him to be the unsupervised director of a school for their on children and grandchildren. Somehow I suspect not.

The point is that CAM's problems have basically nothing at all do with race. Most abuse scandals involve victims of the same race. And unfortunately people with very questionable pasts do get hired as unsupervised directors of schools - just look at the Herr situation.

Bringing up race and "white privilege" has absolutely nothing to do with the problem in question. Would it somehow have been more moral and less repugnant if Mast had perpetrated whatever he did in the Falkland Islands instead of Haiti?

Call it what you want. I would argue that they were more careless with the lives of Haitian children than they would have been with the lives of their own children.

I don't believe it is true that CAM allows employees to rape black men. It is dissallowed.
I don't believe it is true that they are using funds to cover his tracks, nor is this their intent.

CAM leaders have taken responsibility for what happened, have taken leadership responsibility away from those who had responsibility at the time, are increasing accountability procedures, and are doing more thorough references on prospective employees.

I think that’s an unfair accusation. Whilst I’m generally opposed to foreign aid programmes, most the people at CAM are pretty caring and want to help other people’s children.

There was not really any awareness of how wrong what they were doing was.

I said they were "careless" not malicious.

Sorry, Ken, but when I think about our poster Ernie here on this forum, I do not see him as someone who would be more careless with children in the mission than he would his own kids. (Of course, every person exercises the greatest care with their own children. I hope you aren’t claiming that’s a bad thing.)

This is simply an unfounded accusation, and this kind of thing is a great way to make it much harder for people like me to bring about any real change at CAM.

I have not followed this thread or issue as closely as some. So I may be way off base. But I have a hard time believing that the decision process that lead CAM leaders into "rehabilitating" Jeriah Mast and covering up his past (or at least looking the other way) when they were sending him to Haiti is they same process they would have followed had they been hiring a director for their own children's school in Ohio.

I'm going by news reports such as this one: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ch ... y-n1049916 If you want to argue that Anabaptist schools in the US would have followed the same lax employment standards when hiring someone to have 24/7 unsupervised access to their own children then fine. But I have a hard time believing it.
A Christian nonprofit has stated that two managers knew for years that an employee had confessed to a history of sexual offenses against minors but still allowed him to serve their organization as a missionary to Haiti.

Jeriah Mast, 38, from Millersburg, Ohio was indicted in a Holmes County court on July 3 with seven felony charges of gross sexual imposition and seven misdemeanor charges of sexual imposition.

Those crimes, which according to court documents allegedly involved children under the ages of 16 and some under 13, took place in Ohio between 1998 and 2008, Holmes County Prosecutor Sean Warner said. Mast pleaded not guilty to all charges, his lawyer John Johnson Jr. told NBC News.

Mast also faces allegations of sexually abusing minors during his time serving Christian Aid Ministries in Haiti, according to the Berlin, Ohio-based nonprofit.

“It is already well known that our former employee, Jeriah Mast, has confessed to molesting boys while working for our organization in Haiti,” Christian Aid Ministries' board of directors wrote in an open letter on June 17.

Christian Aid Ministries said in the same letter that two managers at the organization had known about Mast's behavior since 2013, when he had admitted to Christian Aid Ministries staff to "sexual activity" with boys under the age of 18 "that had taken place several years prior in Haiti," Robert Flores, an attorney representing Christian Aid Ministries, told NBC News.

Maybe you should pay more attention.

Harold Herr did exactly that - became a director at a school, despite his easily-known history, and eventually worked his way into senior leadership in various organisations.

You seem to believe that the people in CAM somehow have contempt for Haitian children and love their own children more. That's simply not the case with any CAM people I know. They just plain don't work that way. If anything, their mindset is to send the very best of the best to Haiti.

I was not aware that Jeriah Mast made any prior admissions about abuse taking place in Haiti. Did he actually, or is was NBC simply careless in their quote?
