When it just doesn't fit anywhere else.

Which is why I think a consistent Christian position is to not hold any stocks or funds.
Are you implying it is inconsistent for a Christian to hold stocks or funds? If so, why do you do it?

I seen something the other day that said, "Stock gambling."
It really hit me that most stocks are no different than gambling - throw money at something and see if you get some back...
If we are to do all to the glory of God - I think doing this violates some biblical principles. Especially that we should be laying up treasures in heaven.

I suppose that disinterest in filthy stock is why you have taken up storekeeping rather than farming? Your stock stays cleaner?
I have chickens. I think they could could count as filthy stock?

My employer paid my part of my compensation (about 20% of it) via stock options. I sought some input from folks at church, and both they and myself felt it would be alright as long as I planned to sell them as soon as feasible, and had a plan to avoid playing the stock market.

I picked an exercise date and then a sell date based on capital gains, and then prayerfully committed to the Lord to stick to that.

Since then, I’ve lost not quite a six figure amount but close to it in decline since I learned about the Coronavirus in December and had a desire to sell. I have felt like choosing to sell would be dishonest to the Lord, myself, and wound be participating in the stock market.

I have my sell on date and don’t even know if it will be worth anything then. I have to trust in the Lord’s convictions to me combined with input and admonishment and brotherly concern and follow through with that.

Unfortunately, I don’t have an easy way to switch occupations. (I tried 5 years ago and failed to earn enough to support myself, let alone a family.) So I’m stuck with the kind of job I have, which presents challenges since I don’t work a typical, conventional Mennonite job or career or employer.

Josh wrote:PaulD, nearly everyone who wants to get into day trading is looking to make money quickly without working hard. Making money that fast usually involves profiting from someone else’s loss.

More practically, many such people end up losing their initial investment, so it’s a waste of both time and money.

If this really interests you, create a fantasy portfolio, play it for a few years, and then see how well you did.
Parable of the 5 talents? Christian financial counselors advise letting your money grow in stocks & bonds over time, conservative approach

The Bible teaches against charging interest, and it also teaches against being unequally yoked and thus against owning part of a business that does un-Christian things. This is a position many Mennonite and Anabaptists have.

If someone wants a more worldly approach, sure, go for stocks and bonds (the latter hasn’t had a decent return for half of my life)

I'm not suggesting, nor are 401ks, a matter of charging interest- what did I say that suggested that?

Bonds involve charging interest/usury.

True, but what did Jesus say on this topic?
