Dollar’s been stable for years.PaulD wrote:Yeah I really think we should live like James Madison envisioned, everyone on a piece of land toiling to make our own food and clothing from the soil with our own hands and totally refrain from use of the oil powered industrial revolution and all of its changes. If I could move to a place like that I think I would. The closest thing to that today may be some of the Pacific islands.Josh wrote: ..
I am trying to do a lot of that myself with my garden. We have to make a living in the system we were born into. And I think buying a piece of land to live on for gardening etc is the best investment one can make.
As far as dollar devaluation, Yes my Grandpa bought my great grandpa's land for $50 per acre in 1950 that had been worth $10 per acre in 1920. Grandpa sold 20 acres of it for $500 per acre in 1976. Grandma kept that 10,000 in the bank to her death 2 years ago but today that land sells for over $10,000 per acre so her 10,000 can't even touch that 20 acres. I can provide lots of proof of the demise of the dollar since we left the gold and silver standards.![]()
Yes and the reason why the Dow went to 30k from its pre-2008 high of 14,500 is also partly because of currency devaluation and the expansion of the monetary system.
Deflation is a big worry now. That happened in the Great Depression, and the government confiscated privately owned gold then.
The bigger question is why you’re worried about it, and why you think playing the Wall Street casino will help. What did Jesus have to say about money?

Many commodities are dropping like a rock. Deflation is coming for many things. Oil and gas. Milk is being dumped down the drains, although that may be because of supply chain realignment problems because other areas are limiting retail milk sales at the same time. Cheese prices are in free-fall. Eggs are crazy but just wait till after Easter and till all the growers ramp up supply. Fresh chicken is in the dumps right as we enter summer grilling season. At the same time beef is high. Commodity trading would be a nightmare right about now.
The economy re-opening may bring things roaring back but at this point it is hard to know what may have changed permanently in terms of consumer habits and buying patterns, and what will recover.

I think I may want to check where my treasure and heart is whether or not I do or do not have enough money or debt or stocks or other to worry about inflation of the US$, and stocks.Josh wrote:. If you have enough money to worry about inflation of the US$, and think stocks are a good idea, you may want to check where your treasures and your heart are.
After all, most of the folks Jesus told that to were monetarily dirt poor and those who voted to crucify him, though most were dirt poor, had their heart wrapped up in their own legalistic self-righteous smuggness, and were so much more superior to that dirty publican.
And by the way, the two things that give me the most pleasure in life are growing things and sharing them with others. And that may be my idol, it does give me pause...
I agree. I know history well.Josh wrote: Deflation is a big worry now. That happened in the Great Depression, and the government confiscated privately owned gold then.
I am not. Why do you feel the need to assume I am?The bigger question is why you’re worried about it,
Why do you feel the need to attack people and assume heart motives brother?and why you think playing the Wall Street casino will help. What did Jesus have to say about money?

I thought this video by a Wisconsin farmer explained the situation quite well.mike wrote: Milk is being dumped down the drains, although that may be because of supply chain realignment problems because other areas are limiting retail milk sales at the same time.

Re: Good stock n commodity trading sites?
PaulD, nearly everyone who wants to get into day trading is looking to make money quickly without working hard. Making money that fast usually involves profiting from someone else’s loss.
More practically, many such people end up losing their initial investment, so it’s a waste of both time and money.
If this really interests you, create a fantasy portfolio, play it for a few years, and then see how well you did.

Re: Good stock n commodity trading sites?
Good point. Another angle to the puzzle is that since we live on a farm we do have commodities and when the buying stops and things tank and wallstreet is scared we are selling our wheat soybean and oil at dirt cheap prices, so those city buyers may be helping producers like us not take as heavy of losses by putting a bottom on pricing. Though the supply and demand factors are the long term factors. I have held grains for a while and had prices come back a bit, and storage fees are usually reasonable as long as they still have a place to put it. But yeah the markets are all over the place and all producers are involved in the game whether we like it or not.Josh wrote:PaulD, nearly everyone who wants to get into day trading is looking to make money quickly without working hard. In that case, I would find a competent financial advisor familiar with agricultural clients who can help navigate that.

I suppose that disinterest in filthy stock is why you have taken up storekeeping rather than farming? Your stock stays cleaner?mike wrote:I don't believe in getting involved in filthy stock and commodity trading; I just believe in having mutual funds and a 401K and letting the heathen do it for on my behalf.
