^ That water pie (previous post) actually looks quite good, especially the butter!

Those Depression-era cooks deserve deep respect. :D
That was before my time, but my elders survived it. What fortitude!
As i look at the ingredients, tho, “sugar.”
i remember our family’s year of depression when my father was gravely ill, the doctors baffled.
He was at home with us. Bedridden. Our mother was beyond distraught.

i was 13, i remember walking in on my mother sitting at our dining room table (an aluminum folding table) her head in her hands, when i asked, “mama??” she, in a rare moment of confiding worry+grief, said, “there is no money to buy sugar.” :-|

sugar may have been $.38 for 5 pounds. maybe $.25 for 5 pounds.

in my entire life, that moment in time was probably my greatest lesson in economics.

when i turned 14, i got required permission from parents and school to begin work.
i worked 20 hours weekly through high school. full class schedule, plus. (no work-study then.)
not realizing it, i lived a double life.

i graduated h.s. a year early. i was so tired.
 i then went to work 40 hours. it felt like a vacation!

.. “I think it is funny” .. ^^

There’s plenty to choose from  Just do a search for “off road RVs.”
Some of them look like family vehicles for an apocalypse.
