I expect to see more states do this, particularly as the government has trillions of economic stimulus. They need to get cash in people’s bank accounts and keep people SPENDING.
Will my mortgage be put on hold for a couple of months? That would help!

We are asking any employees that have been travelling out of country to stay home for two weeks.
Tough to do when we are extra busy right now. Toilet paper is not the only thing people are stocking up on.

Ouch. That's not fun from a staffing perspective.appleman2006 wrote:We are asking any employees that have been travelling out of country to stay home for two weeks.

As much as I've crowed on MennoNet about immigrants, we're about to see a nice shortage of immigrant workers that we've become very accustomed to. I hope there are Americans (and Canadian) residents/citizens who are excited about the prospect of working a lot harder and more often than they're used to.

soc sec. which means, any small reprieve is welcome. Are you on a fixed income or do you rely on employment?
i’m accustomed to it, but, it seems my status excludes me from just about any effort extended to many others, no matter what parameters are used. i’m sure this is no accident, i have great faith actuaries are on the job, making sure a whole lot of us do not benefit by most things. no food stamps for me!
i counsel my family, “Medicare” is not free! don’t be fooled by that.
it’s a major expense for me. like another house payment.
locally, i’m seeing grace periods extended for different necessities, like the power company is not disconnecting or charging late fees for a period, the county is postponing all evictions,
there are various courtesies extended without qualifications required. that’s extraordinary.
so, my mind wandered, and i thought, how nice to have a couple of months with mortgage payments POSTPONED. (not forgiven, the mortgage term would just be extended.)
presumably, taxes+ins would have to be promptly paid.
Medicare? i expect costs will go ‘way up next year, due to the virus this year.
Soc Security? at best, i expect it to remain flat. part of Medicare is taken out of SS before it is distributed.

As far as I know, Colorado hasn't taken those kinds of steps yet. State and local government institutions are starting to close down for the next couple of weeks. Apparently, the spread is so bad in the mountain areas, that the governor has ordered the ski resorts to close for the next week.Josh wrote:Ohio has announced no questions asked unemployment for anyone who doesn’t get paid sick leave, effective today.Szdfan wrote:Going to work during a pandemic because your job has an inadequate leave policy makes going to work a lot more exciting.

Mandated sick leave might be coming. I think right now, my employer is trying to get ahead as much as possible in case we do have to shut down. Manufacturing is not one of those things that can be done from home.

temporal1, the good news is that Social Security will keep flowing. The government wants people to have money to spend and able to buy the things they need. Trillions of dollars are being released to make this happen.temporal1 wrote:soc sec. which means, any small reprieve is welcome. Are you on a fixed income or do you rely on employment?

Re: Poll: Personal Coronavirus Permanent Impact
Wonder, it must vary a lot- my mom is on social security on CA & gets $200 mo food stamps. She worked till she was 72. Her medical bills are nothing, even having gone through cancer lady year & had 75% of her stomach removed, she didn't have much to pay. She pays $0 for her supplemental insurance. We've all been amazed at her inexpensive medical expenses. She gets a certain amount given to her a month she can put towards vitamins, or incidentals that qualify. She almost makes me look forward to that age, financially she does ok! (Dad left, when mom was 37. She never remarried & the Lord has been her ever present help).temporal1 wrote:soc sec. which means, any small reprieve is welcome. Are you on a fixed income or do you rely on employment?

I'm just wondering if you are getting a raw deal in Illinois compared to Californians.

Re: Poll: Personal Coronavirus Permanent Impact
this is a minor matter, not worth debate, i was simply thinking out loud about something i stated may not ever be on the table.temporal1, the good news is that Social Security will keep flowing. the greatest effort is going toward the target group you describe.
some efforts are extended to everyone, without qualification. that was what i was describing. nothing more.
at this point, i’m seeing things done i’ve never seen, and, i believe we’re still early in this process.
at the moment, the future is up for grabs.
i fear all the massive amounts of money allocated may be stirring the panic as much as anything.
that’s a lot of money being waved around, i don’t see measures for accountability, we already know how incompetent+corrupt government is - with their best planning. so. hmm.
i can only be a witness.

In the meanwhile, i believe there is a lot of difference in benefits, depending on location, and income, available supplemental insurance, etc. Your mother is likely in an area with high home values and high incomes, which, i think, does add to potential benefits.
Josh may know more about it than i do.
i can barely understand what i’m told, i should have gone to actuarial school to try to deal with Soc Sec and Medicare! the variations are beyond me.
Medicare and Medicaid are two very different things.
