Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
Try to run our classes online as best as we can. Some kids will do it. Some won't have wifi at home. All students have school issued chromebooks and we use something called google classroom which is sort of like facebook for schools. Each class has a separate web site where we post up assignments, students can turn things in, ask questions, chat, that sort of thing. We have been using it for years, but not 100% like now.violet wrote:as a teacher, what does that mean for you?
We will probably post up video lectures (short ones) and lots of online worksheets and quizzes and reading assignments, that sort of thing. Grading and cheating will be the big issues. Just have to work through that as best as we can. There are more secure online learning portals where they can do that sort of thing but we won't be using them.

We’re doing the same Ken. I’m curious how you’re thinking to give assessments. I’m wracking my brain on how to give online assessments that my students won’t be tempted to cheat on.Ken wrote:Try to run our classes online as best as we can. Some kids will do it. Our small church is canceling services for the next two weeks. That's probably wise, but I'm sure going to miss two weeks of church.

For older students use extended response questions through Google Classroom. It's got a built in plagiarizer checker...and you can always view the full revision history. The students have to think to come up with original writing. Much like on this forum.

How about a graded thread with feedback and defense of position?joshuabgood wrote:We are in the same boat. Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
I'm probably not going to bother to do actual tests for test grades until they return. I'll probably just do mostly participation and group work type grades. Maybe give them some online practice tests to take. But mostly just try to give them reasonably engaging assignments. There is a LOT of science material online including a bazillion youtube lectures by various teachers and sites that are better than what I can put together anyway. Bozeman Science is the best. http://www.bozemanscience.com/ put together by a guy named Paul Anderson who was the American teacher of the year from Montana. He has an amazing catalog of online lectures on every science topic. So have them watch short videos on topics and take their own notes or summaries, make a venn diagram or concept map or whatever seems appropriate and post up to turn in. Howard Hughes Medical Institute for biology is excellent. Huge amount of videos, worksheets, online labs, that sort of thing: https://www.biointeractive.org/ There are also endless science movies you can have them watch on youtube or HHMI biointeractive or other sites like PBS and then write short reports or summaries.HondurasKeiser wrote:We’re doing the same Ken. I did this a bit before in Texas. The key is to keep things engaging and participatory. Make your web portals a fun hangout for the kids where they can chat with each other in your absence, answer each other's questions and work together. Empower the brighter kids to be group leaders on various topics. It's great when you log into your class, see a bunch of questions posted up by students that have already all been answered and discussed by other students. Let them goof off a bit online if they want and diverge so that your class can be a social place for kids to hang out,not just a portal where they go for their assignments. And do collaborative assignments. They already know how to do this. They can all edit and work on group documents, that sort of thing. Try to keep the class together, not just a bunch of individual students coming to find their busy work.
I don't really need a place here to talk about this stuff unless you guys need it. My district has a huge interactive online learning web portal thing up and running for teachers. But if some of you out there further from civilization want to chat about this stuff I'd be happy to participate.
