Sasha Krause: Missing

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

What would it look like if we spent more time becoming informed about missing non-Mennos in our communities, promoting awareness, praying, showing support for families, maybe even bugging law enforcement?
Amen. I have been thinking this every time I see this thread. Women and girls go missing quite frequently and the majority do not get the attention this case has. I suspect when black and brown women go missing, it attracts even less attention. My first nations friends in Canada point to an alarming number of native women and girls missing or found murdered and how little attention it receives. They feel abusing native women has been normalized to the point the system no longer protects.

i marvel at the Anabaptist communication network. i’m not part of it.
i see lots of positives, i’m not surprised there are negatives. that’s life on earth.

when the Faye Swetlik case appeared, a website for missing children popped up, there are AMBER Alerts, and more. at that time, i tried to find Sasha’s name on one, but did not. Sasha is not a minor, but there are similar resources for missing adults. it may have been there, or elsewhere, my searches are far from complete.

Missing Children / AMBER Alerts
http://www.missingkids.org/search

Now i see Sasha’s info on this FBI site:
FBI / Missing Persons of America

https://www.missingpersonsofamerica.com ... community/

One complication with missing children/persons is, often family is involved, for instance child custody disputes. In my non-legal view, these are a subset of “missing.” However, i don’t have any bright ideas about how they could be better reported or handled in courts. i wish there was no need.

In my lifetime, a lot has been done in the world to formally identify, share info, search for missing persons. A lot has changed. The problem continues.

John Walsh, and more recently, Elizabeth Smart, are leaders.
1981 / Adam Walsh Missing
https://time.com/4437205/adam-walsh-murder/

i have read about some of the plights of Native Americans in Canada and in the U.S.
including missing persons.

If black or brown conservative Anabaptist go women, it gets an equal amount of concern. The last time this happened was at the EYN school in Nigeria, which attracted global attention for years. They were even eventually recovered.

I get really tired of left wing talking points that accuse all of us of being evil racists.

There are currently 291 open cases of missing people in New Mexico.

http://missingpersons.dps.state.nm.us/mpstate_serv

How many of these have received even 1/100th of the coverage that the Sasha Krause case has received in the media? And if you don't think the Sasha Krause case hasn't been in the media you only need to google her name to disabuse yourself of that notion.

Don't be so defensive Josh. No one is calling you an evil racist. But at the same time, the media's obsession with missing white women over any other kind of missing people is a very well documented phenomenon. People have actually studied this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_w ... n_syndrome

In the United States:
A study of news coverage of missing children found that African American missing children cases were significantly underrepresented when compared to national statistics. Female African American missing children were significantly underrepresented in national news reporting. The coverage of death cases for African American boys was significantly greater than expected. Coverage of non-African American female kidnapping cases was greater than expected. A subsequent study found that girls from minority groups were the most under-represented in these missing-children news reports by a very large margin.
And in Canada:
According to a study published in The Law and Society Association, aboriginal women who go missing in Canada receive 27 times less news coverage than white women; they also receive "dispassionate and less-detailed, headlines, articles, and images"

I’m not sure that giving Arizona’s statistics of missing children is directly relevant with missing adults in New Mexico.

There are currently 915 open cases of missing people in Arizona of which 179 are missing children.

https://kvoa.com/news/2019/02/26/how-da ... s-arizona/
https://www.abc15.com/news/news-photo-g ... open-cases

That is an average of about 3 per day. How many of these have received even 1/100th of the coverage that the Sasha Krause case has received in the media? And if you don't think the Sasha Krause case hasn't been in the media you only need to google her name to disabuse yourself of that notion.

Ken,

I don’t run the media, and my church is currently encouraging us to consume even less of news media. So I really have nothing to do with their coverage of missing people.

Maybe it would be a good idea for all of us to stop paying attention to the biased, crooked, lying press.

Is it possible that one of the reasons for this is that when something happens so often it is no longer news? I do not know for sure but in the case of aboriginal people in Canada I am not totally sure that some people near to the issue really want much more publicity let alone a lot more light shed on why so many in their community disappear. I am guessing that the issue of human trafficking is at least related and somewhat responsible. But I have no proof.

Correction:
Now i see Sasha’s info on this FBI site:
FBI / Missing Persons of America
https://www.missingpersonsofamerica.com ... community/
i posted above.
when i saw this link, it stated it was an FBI page.
but, thinking it over, and studying the page, i don’t believe it is an FBI page.
i don’t know anything about it.

now i notice different search results CLAIM to be FBI, but, i don’t think so.
so. be careful.

i’m pretty sure the broad numbers add to the problems.
there are distinctly different subsets of missing people, children and adults, not always clearly known from the start. some never clarified. families and authorities try to solve mysteries, not always possible.

I think that is right. That is what I was trying to get at by using the word "normalized."
