Another chorus was worded 'Holy Spirit fall afresh on me'. It just seemed strange that we would use the word 'come' (which seemed to indicate to me that the Holy Spirit was external to me) instead of a phrase indicating that our desire was to be guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit within us. Were we asking for someone external from us to come into our presence or rather was it about us knowing/experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.
Here is an example of what seems to be many of the people filled on Pentecost being filled later:
31 When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak God’s message with boldness.
[bible]Acts 4,31[/bible]
Yes, and I think this ties in with the NIV - Eph 5:18 - 'Stop getting drunk with wine, which leads to wild living, but keep on being filled with the Spirit.'

This reads that Holy Spirit filling is an on-going need in our lives and another description of how this can manifest itself in the following verses - 'speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,' NKJV. I wonder what that might have sounded like in the early church compared to today. What was 'spiritual songs' as different from 'hymns'. I had an aunt that would go about her day making up little songs she sang throughout the day. I wonder if this is what was meant by 'spiritual songs'. I have done this too at times.

One phrase that is seeing increased usage in Catholic world: “break open the word”.

I hear it’s because a popular speaker who was formerly a protestant uses it in his talks.

Here is a strange one that our pastor often uses and someday I'm going to ask him about it. I doubt anyone else here has heard their pastor use it.

We have one of those screen countdowns to show when the service is to begin and followed by a brief instrumental the pastor gets all the announcements out of the way and welcomes visitors. Then just before we get ready for the first song he says -

'Before we jump into worship' (and adds a last comment)

No, we don't have any (well one) literal jumping or holy rollering going on but this sure is a strange phrase he uses that I have often heard others say 'Before we enter into worship'.

"Jump into .... (whatever)" is a phrase that I hear youth group leaders use quite a bit. Maybe it's a phrase among a certain age group? My generation uses the word "start" as in "start our worship".

I made a silly post a while back with words obviously not used in the bible. What I was hoping to start is a conversation about what it means for a word, or an idea containhed in a word(s) to be "in the bible". How is binding authority constituted? For example there are many unholy, sinful things "in the bible", how do we form a theology among them. Maybe this is distinct from this thread and deserves its own thread.
