Everyone thinks that Shady Maple is the place to eat. Haven't been there in many years. Lititz has some neat attractions. Fox Creamery I'm told is a must do. Then there's the Pretzel Hut....

Years ago the local newspaper, Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster Online did an expose' on Shady Maple and at the end of the article the writer made the comment about Shady Maple being the ultimate "Temple of Gluttony". How right she was. Shady Maple reminds me of troughs where cattle go to eat. The food may be good, but it is loaded with sodium, butter and other chemicals to enhance the flavor. We have eaten there on occasion, as many well meaning organizations use Shady Maple Banquet (food is served smorgasbord style) as a fund raising tool. There were two incidents where I used the restroom after the meal and there were people in the rest rooms barfing. Yuk.

Fox Creamery is great, although a bit pricey. Gus's Keystone and Brickerville House are good places where you can get a good meal for reasonable prices.

The last place I ate in the Ephrata area was the Udder Choice. Good food at a good price. Never heard of Gus's until now. Fox's seems to be a hotspot, at least I hear about it a lot at church. We had an evangelist from Jersey and our pastor took him there on a Friday night. The evangelist couldn't understand why people would wait in line for 45 minutes for ice cream :D

I normally shy away from buffet restaurants but I actually recommend people visit Shady Maples at least once simply for the experience. The food is definitely a notch above most buffets. The cloister is a great visit. And Muddy Creek library is another place I would highly recommend.

I was also going to recommend Muddy Creek Farm Library. Does anybody know if Amos B. Hoover is there on any regular basis? If he is, it would definitely be worthwhile to visit while he's there.

I'm going to be passing through in the near future, without a lot of time. Is there anything in particular I should not miss?
How near??

Amos B. Hoover is the founder of the Muddy Creek Farm Library. He began the library in his home many years ago, out of a profound interest in Anabaptist and local history. He started a collection of old writings, books, etc. and eventually his collection outgrew his home and a facility was built on the Fairmount Homes complex. Amos is getting up in years and his wife, Nora, passed away just recently.
