Worldly Purchase?

Re: Worldly Purchase?
Is your question more asking about buying a brand new car? Or is it a question of buying this particular car?

As someone who never wanted to, secretly scoffed at it, and ended up doing it, I do too.appleman2006 wrote:Good advice Peter. As someone who has never personally owned a new vehicle I can agree with it.
BTW, for a personal car, the numbers strongly (overwhelmingly!) point towards used for me.

Peter, your linked article is helpful, but dated 2012.Peter:
Tough to beat that formula.
For what it's worth, here's the best thing I've ever read about choosing a car. (Note that some articles on that website contain profanity, unfortunately.)

Re: Worldly Purchase?
Wade mentions the higher insurance for new vehicles: very true. I have friends who buy new vehicles every 3-5 years. I buy used reliable brands every 20-25 years. Am I holier: hardly. Am I more thrifty? I like to think so and I have to say that saving a couple hundred every year on insurance for an older car is money in my pocket. YMMV

That just means the recommended vehicles are even cheaper!temporal1 wrote:Peter, your linked article is helpful, but dated 2012.Peter:

Was Cash for Clunkers ever discussed? .. my son, an old car guy, STILL complains about it.

Ok, from a person who has had a number of them, as well as a good VW specialist mechanic:Valerie wrote:I've love VW Beetles since I was 5 years old-
This is the last year their making them-
Would purchasing (as I have to buy a new car soon, I had a great deal on a lease) a "Final Edition" VW convertible beetle be considered 'worldly'?
Hubby & I were discussing this- we have been looking at the reliable suv's out there now but oh, this bug!! I have a VW presently-I respect their products-
Just wondered- it's funny how we can 'rationalize' things- like I was thinking about when we drive to Holmes County how nice the roofless buggies are for couples as their horse drives them around the countryside
Your "New Beatle" is essentially my two-door golf with a slightly different body. I have had very good results from my VWs. I would suggest you avoid the "DSG" transmission, as it is a maintenance headache, and if you wind up looking for a used one avoid the 2l 8 valve engine as well. I have the 2.5 L 5 cylinder, and it runs nicely, and avoids the issues that turbos can cause. It will get you where you are going to go, with reasonable comfort, and good economy.
As an investment, they will likely make so many of them they will not be rare.

I probably wouldn't buy a used one as Neil does not want to buy a used car- for a variety of reasons- I held on to my last VW beetle for about 11 years and so I'm really attracted now to the 7 yr warranty of a new VW, longer than most VW's. We have been leasing a Tiguan and it's been a great car- of course leasing never allows you to determine potential problems as you are turning them in before they have high enough miles to start having issues.
Repairs are extremely costly and a broken down car is such a pain! Been through that enough- the inconvenience & cost (mechanics make 7x more an hour than I do!) so that being said- it is a comfort to us to avoid car repairs since I'm the lone driver in the home.
They 'say' they are not making many of the "Final Editions" and if we get the Costco Auto Program discount (which we can) at least we would be off to a good start- I think an insurance man would be wise to get advice from as well.
I will save your advice regarding engine types- we ALMOST bought a diesel VW station wagon a few years ago- the Lord spared us those problems that hurt so many that had bought those- VW seems to have recovered.

Re: Worldly Purchase?
That is true- the safety features they've added to new cars these days, have 'helped' insurance costs though- at least that's what our insurance man told us. When I am 'retired' and don't have to have a reliable car that I spend a fortune on repairs (like in times past, where I paid a mechanic much more per hour than I make, and have to 'rent' a car while it sits in a shop) then I may get a used car that I don't mind breaking down on the side of the road from time to time. Last time that happened to me (4 years ago) I had to have my car towed quite far- and rented a car for ever a week while it was being repaired.MaxPC wrote:Wade mentions the higher insurance for new vehicles: very true.
