You may be correct but I took it that the MS-13 gang member "made a claim of fear to being deported back to his native country". Perhaps that's different than claiming asylum?Bootstrap wrote:That link points to arrests of 6 gang members at the border. I don't think that contradicts anything I have said, and none of these seem to have been asylum seekers or people whose children were taken from them.GaryK wrote:When I read articles like this, my mind almost immediately goes to how you have been promoting political "truths" that don't seem to take into account the reality of what is actually happening on the border.
I don't bring this up to rehash the whole border saga but to simply point out that it often appears that you are doing the same thing you are arguing that others do.
I'd be happy to discuss that kind of thing in a separate thread - or not - as you prefer.

Boot is correct, it's Godwin's law. There's an MN corollary for EO references, but I won't mention it in a thread on reducing hostility.Robert wrote:Kind of like the Nazi reference within three pages of a forum thread. What was that called again OJ?Wayne in Maine wrote:I see my point about "Trump is... " has been validated.
In place of Current Events we could discuss futuristic subterranean transportation technology, which would indeed be a boring discussion.Robert wrote:The best way to reduce the hostility here is to shut down the Current Events section. While we would all get along better, it would be more boring.
Or open a section on Quantum Physics, which could be even more Bohring.

Incidentally, there's also Godwin's New Law:ohio jones wrote:Boot is correct, it's Godwin's law.
Godwin's New Law: It takes at least two generations before a culture re-civilizes itself around a new communications technology.

Amen and well said.Robert wrote:I can remember years ago on MD with LC and a few others. Things would get heated, then cool off. We discussed those things, but spent a lot of time just connecting and having fun. We seem to have lost the fun part and just deal with the heavy stuff a lot.
Just about every topic has been discussed over and over. After a while, I find people are not interested in hearing, but just projecting their opinions. While we may round the sharp edges of each other a little, we each hold to our core beliefs and seldom change them here. We may go through a transformation in real life, then come here and project that change, but seldom is someone swayed or transformed by a forum post. I think that is a good thing. We need to be shaped by real life, not by an internet tool. It should only enhance our life and perspective, not dominate it.
So to those who want to change me, you better meet my wife and work through her. You got little, but better chance of changing me that way then here.
The best way to reduce the hostility here is to shut down the Current Events section. While we would all get along better, it would be more boring.

I, for one, would like you to share these, Josh. I think it would help build a greater sense of commonality here. It might encourage more of us to do the same.Josh wrote: There are a lot of personal testimonies, victories, and things like that I would love to share, but I don’t want to here since they would simply get ripped apart and devoured.

And if even personal sharing results in hostility, avoiding any particular topic won't help.

Oh no it wouldn't! And Mathematics leaves no room for opinions.ohio jones wrote:In place of Current Events we could discuss futuristic subterranean transportation technology, which would indeed be a boring discussion.Robert wrote:The best way to reduce the hostility here is to shut down the Current Events section. I do not want to risk MN drama with me to spread and affect other people in real life, and I don’t want my real life testimonies ripped to shreds.JimFoxvog wrote:I, for one, would like you to share these, Josh. They’re precious and special to me. This forum is a place where it is fair game to challenge my salvation and publicly denounce me as a gravely immoral person, and nobody does anything about it.
If MN is to be a less hostile place, a good place is to not allow challenging someone else’s salvation in public.

We can't even get a good thread on Linux to take off. Let alone quantum physics.

Re: Can we make MN less hostile?
Unless they're EO... then to hell with them. Or at least the last thread I found on the subject seems to think so. You guys want to be less hostile. Stop being so self righteous. I came through Anabaptism and picked up some pretty valuable things. However, it was in their nature to tear each other apart. My last straw came the day of my son's baptism and I had to stand in a man's yard for an hour and listen to how evil the "Old Conference" was. As a Mennonite it was seeing the church tear apart a young teacher because he disciplined the wrong kid (who picked at my kid relentlessly and even physically bullied him while we were setting up for their classmate's funeral). I keep trying to come back here, hoping to find the mythical Anabaptists of Nickel Mines, but it's never going to happen. Why? Because you are always justified in your own minds. You are always looking at your tassels, knots, and tithes of cumin.Josh wrote: If MN is to be a less hostile place, a good place is to not allow challenging someone else’s salvation in public.
Josh, you are the worst. You are joining a cult by everybody's measure of a cult. I hope they have changed as you claimed, but up until 5 years ago they were exactly that. You cannot keep demanding consideration when you give no one the same courtesy. Even when I was Anabaptist you stayed on me and tried to make me feel like I was 2 inches tall.
So, whatever. Keep creating threads where you ask these probing questions that turn up the same answer, "it's everybody but us that's the problem."
