National Storm Report / MAJOR SNOWSTORM HITS MONTANA — Dangerous Roads & Power Outage Risk! / -12min
A powerful October winter storm brought heavy, wet snow and hazardous travel conditions to parts of Montana on October 10–12, 2026. National Weather Service warnings highlighted central and north-central Montana, the Rocky Mountain Front, mountain passes, and the Gallatin Valley near Bozeman.
Some forecast areas faced 10–20 inches of snow, with isolated amounts approaching 30 inches possible in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. These were forecast totals, not confirmed measurements across Montana. Officials also warned that gusty winds and heavy, wet snow could bring down branches and cause isolated power outages.
In this NationalStormReport update, we explain the storm warnings, road risks, mountain conditions, and what residents and travelers should know. For real-time travel conditions, check Montana 511; for official weather warnings, follow the National Weather Service.
It’s been in the 80’sF here in central Illinois.
Harvest time.
To think 20 years ago I wanted to move up to Kalispell, Montana. Glad that along with Northern Wisconsin never panned out. My shoulder I just had fixed is already complaining about it getting into the 30's tonight. That said if I had all the snow removal equipment running that is in the arsenal I could outfit a small neighborhood snow removal setup. Sadly haven't had a good snow since the first winter we got the house. I don't want it to be like I'm back in New Hampshire measuring cleared paths by so many mini dachshunds high by wide on a regular basis but some snow that required more than the single stage would be fun. Then again that means getting equipment running that hasn't ran so maybe i shouldn't wish that.
