I'm not sure who is making that argument.

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

I think there are such folks. Are there also Church of God in Christ Mennonite folks who have confirmation bias, and who intersect with the personality trait of “I am a good person because I hold the right opinions” do, and like hearing people reaffirm how right they are?

I see the relationship between covenants as a sort of progressive revelation. The covenant with Noah was not the same as the covenant with Adam and so with Moses and David. But as Hebrews instructs us, I prize the revelation through Jesus above all.

One of the qualities I appreciate in plain people is humility and a lack of an identity of feeling good about one’s self for having the right opinions. As plain people absorb evangelical doctrine and worldly modernism, though, they tend to start to display this type of thinking. “Thank goodness I have the right opinions, unlike my uneducated / sinful / bigoted neighbour.”

Sort of like feeling good about one's self for having the right opinion about plain people and the way they think?JohnH wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2026 12:14 amI’m sure there are.Ernie wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2026 10:21 pmI think there are such folks. I’m proud I’m not prideful, I’m full of humility and always have the right focus.

Yes, me too, and I also have exercised proper judgement and individual initiative to choose the exactly correct church to fellowship with.

I thank God that I am not like other men are. —extortioners, unjust, adulterers—or even like these Mennonites who are off track.

I’m simply making observations, not proclaiming my moral superiority to others. I would, in fact, generally not consider myself more moral, ethical, righteous, godly, etc. than the average Christian I meet.GaryK wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2026 5:54 amSort of like feeling good about one's self for having the right opinion about plain people and the way they think?JohnH wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2026 12:14 amI’m sure there are.Ernie wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2026 10:21 pm

It is a very real problem when a Christian sect devolves into finding justification simply in having the right beliefs.
