Attacks like this have no actual military value. They don't affect the frontlines. They also have no propaganda value, and they just entrench world opinion and the will of the Ukrainians to continue the fight against Russia. I have no idea why they do this.
Ukrainian attacks at least appear to focus on Russian infrastructure such as oil facilities which have an actual affect on Russia's economy. I don't know whether they represent a pin prick or cause actual pain, but at least they would have to be seriously annoying. How a country like Russia can tolerate four years of this sort of thing is beyond me, unless they actually are militarily unable to defend themselves, which is kind of unbelievable.
On the other hand, Russia will get to say they've taken over Khrenograd and Zadryapansk (pop. 80,000, before the war); meanwhile they can't keep the Ukrainians from blowing up their oil refineries right in Moscow.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Trump decides to add Russia next to his list with Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran

The numbers are likely not accurate but it shows the trends. So sad.

The reporting I see would indicate Russian casualties in 2026 have been between 30,000 and 40,000 per month, or about a 1,000 per day. For perspective this would eclipse total US casualties in Vietnam in two months and overtake total US casualties in WW2 in about a year.

I tend to consider that Ukraine and western sources overcount and Russia sources undercount for both sides. I haven’t been following it closely but high casualty counts make sense for a messy war like this.
