i think i saw a Monarch today.
On September 1, Illinois is in the midst of the monarch butterfly’s spring migration season. Monarchs are returning from overwintering in central Mexico to breed in the state’s open fields, prairies, and weedy areas
Illinois Department of Natural Resources

. By late summer, a “super generation” of monarchs emerges, capable of traveling up to 2,500 miles back to Mexico for the winter

A treat to spot them since i was a little girl.

Today ..
we’re past quite a heat spell, my AC had a hard time keeping up, not quite succeeding in the afternoons. :-|

The power was out for a few hours one afternoon, i wasn’t sure what to do, if anything. i made sure my flashlight was working.
Kept the frig door closed. i could go to the car for AC if needed.

Thankfully, power returned to the area ‘way faster than they initially warned, so, all ok.

Temps today are in the low 80s.

We can have hot spells in September+October, i try to be prepared and patient. And go easy on power usage.
i can track my daily-hourly use on the electricity website, it’s quite detailed. i keep an eye on it. esp in summer.

Wife: yes I’ve gotten kind of OCD about that too. We just got our AC replaced and bills were still high, so we got an energy audit and they also helped us get our online account set up so we can watch it. We’re spoiled at night, but we try to make up for it during the day.

Today is Brazilian Independence Day. Most cities have a street named Sete de Setembro, usually the main drag. Two hundred and four years. (They also have a Day of the Republic, November 15th, but it's not celebrated much at all. That happened 67 years later, in 1889.)

Wife: I had to explain to my preschoolers that they could not baptize each other or their baby dolls with their sippy cups. I suppose I should be thankful that the current church doesn’t do immersion.

I had a rubber doll as a child, and giving it baths was what made it end up in the trash burner. It had started to rot from the inside out. (I was probably around four years old at that point, and I remember standing there by the oil drum burner, crying while trying to fish my doll out of the burning trash. But it was already partly burned. I was not given another doll to replace it, so perhaps the cultural attitudes of that era played some part in its end as well.)

By the way, I am not in the least embarrassed to tell that I had a doll as a child (a boy child, in case there is anyone here who doesn't know that I'm a man). I actually think it is healthy for young boys to also have dolls. I think it helps them to develop a more tender, caring side. Much better, at least, than GI Joes, or Ken. (I think that Barbie and her gang are actually bad for girls.)

When our daughter was a young teen, helping with dishes, ever in a hurry, i reminded her she was to wash dishes, not baptize them.

Wife: at least they were burned already baptized. I’ve had to stop my little boy from immersing the dollies in the toilet already. Him and his older sister were having way too much fun this morning and I think it was partly because I’ve been listening to the anabaptist origins stuff the last couple days, and they have been picking up some of what is being said. Toddlers and preschoolers are really into babies.
