Detecting the next pandemic

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

my personal history is great appreciation of vaccines
:)
i had chicken pox, 2 types of measles, mumps. as did everyone i knew.
i didn’t get everything. no scarlet fever. no polio. no whooping cough. lots of diseases “around”. rabies.

parents had a lot of worries. life was uncertain.
life remains uncertain. nothing to compare with how it was before. when disease was certain.

fearing death from disease as a young child is impossible to describe.
i suppose the worst of that comes with high fevers. and seeing fear in your parents’ and doctors’ eyes. silent fear staring at you.

i’m sad to read of new measles outbreaks, no matter location.

It’s amazing anyone was able to stay alive back then without modern vaccines and everything else that makes modern life so great.

One question that has haunted me for decades is about so much loss in gratitude for life, the sanctity of life, the value of morality, including traditional marriage and families.

i remember how grateful i was after surving another dread disease, to be alive, to be allowed the freedom to walk to school, to notice the little flowers popping up, snow meltng, etc., to feel gratitude to be well. at last!

our daughter had chicken pox at 4.
nothing more since in my small family. my grdaughter, born 2007, seemed a virtual pin cushion for multiple required vaccines.
that little trusting body!

what is enough? what is too much? is anything lost?

when good health is taken for granted (a dream!) - are losses of value for the sanctity of life and gratitude for life by-products? :-|
since CIVIL WAR days, medical advancements seem to result in a generalized view that life should be pain-free at all times.

most struggle with keeping gratitude at good levels. expectations are high.
a visit to ICU or Physical Therapy can be reliable reminders.

Maybe. Maybe not.
Almost certainly. As it is DPT is highly effective.
I don't disagree with your basic premise - just figured they might have died of old age by about now...
They would have been well over 130 by now. Don't know where they are buried; I-95 through Baltimore "moved" the cemetery and apparently records of grave relocations were unavailable when my mother started looking in the 90S.

I would suggest wandering through Bank Church graveyard in Harrisonburg and look at all of the children's graves that are there from before 1900. Then look at a modern one. If you don't notice the difference, you are either blind or willfully ignorant.

I don't like that either. However, there is a moral calculus there, and shockingly, I wind up in the same place as the Pope of Rome and the Jesuits. Who would have thunk it.

Like most things, there are degrees of separation from the world. You and I both see it as lamentable and draw different lines.

There is no such thing as a "moral calculus" when it comes to killing babies and using their tissue to try to prolong our own lives.

Anabaptists are people who are willing to lay down their own lives in order not to do something immoral and sinful. I am not surprised, however, to hear the Catholic church is busy compromising on its principles again. They are very good at a "moral calculus" that justifies killing people.
