Despite such requirements, there seems to be quite a bit of buying produce at produce auctions and then bringing it to "markets", complete with high prices.

Re: Sick Bay
I have wholesale customers who sell at farmer's markets or even at their own farm stands, and who take items like blueberries or cherries in plastic containers and bags and put them in open pint containers, which gives the impression they are homegrown or locally grown. I assume they don't actually lie to customers.JohnH wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2026 12:03 amDespite such requirements, there seems to be quite a bit of buying produce at produce auctions and then bringing it to "markets", complete with high prices.

i don’t think they lie to customers .. i think .. customers lie to themselves.mike wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2026 7:09 am I have wholesale customers who sell at farmer's markets or even at their own farm stands, and who take items like blueberries or cherries in plastic containers and bags and put them in open pint containers, which gives the impression they are homegrown or locally grown.

they see the outdoor market, they know how it started, the history, it’s a feel-good festive experience .. all the parts are there ..
even stopping at a one-truck stand selling from the back of the truck pulled off on the side of the road. in WA, cherries, in IL, corn on the cob.
who cares all the labels+signs clearly say it’s imported!

Two of our local markets will tell you origin of fruits and veggies like, NC, PA etc or if it's local will say local. And some of the veggies/fruits will just be there and you know they are like the grocery store items from wherever. I have to appreciate that.
I have seen items noted as 'local' in the grocery store and they were items that were out of season for this area- like cantaloupes in early June and same with corn- and I'm in MD. Now that always made me almost just by pass those items.

Local? It's an abbreviation for "low calorie."QuietlyListening wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2026 12:53 pm I have seen items noted as 'local' in the grocery store and they were items that were out of season for this area- like cantaloupes in early June and same with corn- and I'm in MD.
