Why would anyone fundraise for this kind of a person?
I tend to question that as well. However, no one is forced to donate, and each person decides whether to donate or not. And because of that fact, I fail to understand why the fundraiser is anyone else's business. Unless it is to stir up hatred and vitriol.
Grace,

A comments back you said that you agree that leaders with a past like Leroy should not be in ministry positions.

In my opinion, it is a horrible testimony for churches and Christians to support men like this - public fundraising or not! As Christians, we want to see Jesus lifted up; but when Jesus is being used to hurt sheep and keep the wolves in the sheepfold, it is our business to rid those sheepfolds of wolves who are snacking on sheep.

Proceeds should go to victims, at Mr Miller’s request/agreement.
If Mr Miller finds or is granted non-conflicting work, a percentage for restitution to victims should be assessed. For life. At Mr Miller’s request/agreement. If victims refuse funds, they should choose where funds go.

Victims and their loved ones receive immediate life sentences from abusers/killers without representation or mercy.

For reference, crowd-funding entities like GFM and others, return funds to donors when they decide (immorality, i guess).
There is a subjective factor involved.

Apparently, some at Bethesda Christian Fellowship started a fund raiser for Leroy Miller, saying they would like to see he and his wife take a 6-month period of time to rest and recuperate from some 18 years in ministry without a Sabbatical. The fund raiser would tide them over, during this time.

I have to wonder what were they thinking when they made the fund raiser public? Didn't they realize the fundraiser would stir Trudy and her followers, up. No one is forcing anyone to give to Leroy Miller's fund raiser. But from what is being said against the fundraiser you would think they are.

The whole scenario is sad to see.
Grace, let's deconstruct this.

"some at Bethesda Christian Fellowship started a fund raiser" - in reality, the person who started it is Steve Stutzman's daughter. That's a pretty relevant detail, given Stutzman's reputation and past history around these matters.

Next, why is a fundraiser necessary for a "sabbatical" from ministry? Most conservative Anabaptist ministers aren't paid. If you needed temporary relief from ministry duties you could ask for it and then just go focus on your job where you actually make your money. In any case, Leroy Miller has supposedly been removed from ministry, so he doesn't have any more duties to worry about. Why does he need a fundraiser?

Why is the fundraiser public? Who knows. They decided to make it public. Now it's in the public eye. Nobody "stirred Trudy and her followers up".

I also note that the organiser of the fundraiser is offering to accept tax-deductible donations funnelled through some church or other nonprofit, so this clearly has official support from a church or nonprofit institution. That means this is an institutional fundraiser. It is good and proper to ask what church or institution is expressly providing $30,000 of money to someone like Leroy Miller.

I am aware of that.

Good questions. I don't think he needs a fundraiser, but should get a job.
Why is the fundraiser public? Who knows. They decided to make it public. Now it's in the public eye. Nobody "stirred Trudy and her followers up".
Many, including myself, would not have known about the fundraiser, if Trudy would have not posted it. The "indirect" back and forth I was saw between Tanisha Gingrich and Trudy was just weird. Tanisha posted a response to comments/questions someone made on her Facebook page. Trudy took that response and immediately posted it on her Facebook page. And yes, that whole scenario stirred up Trudy's followers.

I stand by my opinion that Leroy should not be in the ministry. I was referring to the fundraiser. So, if the fundraiser is the business of those outside the organizers and donators, what is the plan of action to stop the fundraiser besides Trudy posting on Facebook.

There are quite a few of Trudy’s social media followers who knew about the fundraiser before she even posted anything. The fundraiser is public.

It kinda feels like anything Trudy posts is “hate” to you. I’m trying to understand why you feel that way.

Raising awareness about issues that are quite literally turning people away from God seems like a good thing to do in the long run, even if it’s uncomfortable and messy.

i added the above underlined, because, when+if there is authentic repentance, the response would be to aid victims.

Some of us have been reporting it to the platform used for the fundraiser. (GIVE SEND GO). We’ve attached court docs, etc.

Criticizing Trudy seems wild to me, given that you feel Leroy should not be in ministry.

Tanisha Gingerich (Stutzman) has decided to discuss this in public, which is why Trudy is responding in public. I don't think it's reasonable to expect Trudy to somehow be silent. Here is an example of why this is a problem; this is from a (public) thread where she was arguing with Keeshon Washington, who is someone I have personally known, spent time with, driven around with for a fundraiser, shared dinner with, and generally have appreciated as a brother in Christ.
Tanisha Gingerich (Stutzman) wrote:Keeshon Marshall Washington[,]

Thank you for your concerns, I am happy to answer. Leroy did not lie in that he was completely unaware a minor was involved in the charges against him. In those days he was in the deplorable habit of exposing himself in public. Eventually he was reported, arrested, and tried in court. The papers mentioning a minor were never brought up in those proceedings (presumably because it was a 17 year old, and under Indiana law that is legally not considered a minor in cases of exposure. If it HAD been considered a minor, he would have done serious jail time). He accepted the ruling of the court at the end of that trial, paid his sentence, and was never aware of the "minor" documents until they were released by Trudy. It was a complete shock to him. According to Indiana law tho, no minor was involved. I used the term "cleared" because in the eyes of the law, he IS clear after his trial and paid sentence. What other term would you like me to use? It seems to me ya'll want to play judge and jury, and do a better job than the court system did.

Leroy's behavior back then was inexcusable. He himself would say that. When he hit rock bottom during his prison time, he found Jesus. The man was cleansed, never to return to those sins again. He has been living clean for two decades, and now people are trying to drag this stuff back up as though he should not now or ever be allowed in ministry. And I am confused and flabbergasted. DO WE BELIEVE IN REDEMPTION OR NOT?

So yes, the accusations are foolishness. And it needs to stop. There are legitimate cases where deplorable people in *current* sins are being put in church leadership and covered for. That is absolutely disgusting and inexcusable, we can agree on that. This is not one of those cases. You are taking your hurt and anger out on the wrong target.

And to be clear, Leroy's sudden resignation was due to serious health concerns, and a realization that due to the viciousness of the attack on him, he was putting others associated with him in the line of fire and he did not feel that was fair to them.

Do you have any other questions?
I don't think it's accurate to call Keeshon "one of Trudy's followers"; he is a person who is from PA and indeed born and raised in the general vicinity of where Bethesda C.F. is, so I think it's reasonable for him to discuss this.

Of note here, we see:
- Defending Leroy's claim that what he did wasn't with a "minor" due to a technicality in Indiana law that gave him a much milder sentence for exposing himself to a 16 or 17 year old than if the victim had been 15. I don't think this is a good thing. Mrs. Gingerich is choosing to defend this strategy of claiming he "wasn't aware" he had been involved with a minor. Regardless or not, I believe it is the responsibility of someone who chooses to expose himself to young Amish girls on the side of the road to ascertain what their ages are, not to claim ignorance when he later finds out they were indeed 16 or 17.
- "DO WE BELIEVE IN REDEMPTION OR NOT?" - apparently, those of us who think someone with such a history shouldn't be involved in a position in senior leadership in ministry... don't believe in redemption? I disagree with this and think installing someone with such a history (in his 30s) of doing so is very unwise, and indeed in many conservative Anabaptist circles, we operate that way. My denomination does, and so do many others. Part of this is out of wisdom that doing so limits the impact to future potential victims if someone does relapse. It is also out of a desire to protect the perpetrator by keeping him away from situations where he might re-offend. That's a good thing. Part of redemption is helping someone have a "way of escape" from temptation.

But the real surprise here is learning that Leroy voluntarily resigned from the senior pastor position... due to health concerns? And because of the "visciousness of the attack on him"? What is viscious about simply exhibiting a public legal record?
