but, even their arms are .. .. .. “striking” to say the least.
You should see Swiss Brah in uniform. ;)
I can only imagine... He would undoubtedly be a great chaperone but swiss guard is likely not his cup of tea.

It would be interesting to know about his Swiss Army experience.

Wife: we’ve talked to our children about this. There are places that we will walk during the day, but not in the evening and I think it’s wise, especially for girls, to go as a group or with an older brother or a guy friend, even if non-resistant. A lot of the street meetings, the girls are always accompanied by men to keep them from being accosted.

Most of the time, highly populated areas are safer, and daytime is safer.

I don’t know if this is a good idea or not, but one thought that I would have with your granddaughter that might be a deterrent without actually fighting back would be one of those loud alarm things. It would get everybody’s attention on you and they might decide it’s not worth the risk.

Otherwise, just situational awareness.

I’m really sorry for the trauma that your family has gone through. I can’t imagine how painful that would be, and I would probably be terrified of the thought of any of my children or grandchildren having to suffer that. Ultimately, there’s probably not a way to completely prevent the possibility , although it is comforting that our lives are in God’s hands. Sasha Krause (a victim from a few years ago) actually was a songwriter, and she had a beautiful song that I think was called “if I die young”, that was just basically an encouragement that she would be with God.

wife: Sidenote. after hearing a horror story from a friend about how her 11-year-old nephew either got messed with or almost did in a public restroom when his mom let him go in on his own, I’ve been pretty cautious about when I’m OK with letting my children go to the restroom without me. Heard of someone in a nearby Walmart trying to attack a child in the girls restroom too, although they managed to get away.
Again, there is a difference between a highly populated restroom or a one stall restroom in Aldi vs a lonely Walmart restroom in the back of the store at night or a park restroom out of sight. I will at least wait outside the restroom for my tweens or go in with them unless it’s a small store.

^^being with a group, or even one peer or companion is so much better than being alone. prevention and deterrence. it’s not 100%, but ‘way better.

most predators are rank cowards, looking for easy opportunities.

i’m aware of alarms, and sprays. in my experience, these incidents happen quickly+randomly, i can’t quite picture having time to use anything like that. as well, sometimes armed+trained police are ambushed+executed. that’s an indicator of how fast+impossible attacks can be. also, devices can be taken from then used against victims.

in this case, as never before, my grdaughter will be using the light rail for summer work, unlike going to school, this is adult transportation, not filled with HS and college students. that’s a whole other ballgame. plus the druggies and homeless.
the rails themselves are dangerous. a push from a passerby can be deadly.

i pray daily for guidance and protection from the Holy Spirit.
my overarching faith. no matter how skittish+alarmed i can be.

we cautioned our son as much as our daughter about predators.

one thing i worry about with boys is, they are often less likely to ask for help, or talk about problems. while predators have many opportunities to prey upon them. all based on trust. and, believing some things are too unthinkable to happen.

thank you!
i’d prefer parents do a lot of thinking about normalizing having friends or groups when going out.
western culture normalized girls and young women, children, being free to go and do alone, to a great extent.

i just don’t see how that luxury can continue under present circumstances.

that high trust life has been fairly thrown away over years.

i spoke with her tonight - she had a great day, no complaints at all. as i expected.
there are 7 interns “from all over” - i’m hoping one will use the same transit she does. :)
i asked her to look for this, that it would be more fun to have someone ..

i follow the company instagram page, lots of young ones, very active. they seem to take many field trips around the area.
she will go M W F, already on Wednesday they’ll be going around downtown Seattle.

this is really a dream. i was so happy when she got to be part of ACE in her HS senior year.
this seems unreal. and, it’s not too much. not overwhelming. not grueling. she’s had a lot of grueling work. :-|

a few weeks, then, college. o.my.goodness.

Otherwise, if she tries to sit near the front, that’s always good or finds someone to sit near that sort of has her back.

i was plannng to have this talk, to make eye contact with the drver/conductor, it only takes a second, sit near them if possible; ask for a motel room near the office, etc. busses still have drvers.

i didn’t see a driver-conductor on the light rail, and each car is designed with “fronts” at both ends.
not much/any security. (one report describes security on 25% of cars.) :-|

i guess their light rail conductors are remote.

Link does have a driver in each train set. They are locked in their cab and probably not supposed to interact with passengers except through the intercom in an emergency. There are no conductors other than the overhead catenary.
