Our chickens molted a month or two ago and just will not restart laying. We finally put a 24-hour light in the coop a few weeks ago hoping it would make a difference. Nothing yet. Not sure how long till we simply 'cull' them. There aren't any signs of a critter getting the eggs.
Years ago when we had a backyard flock we were told that a 24-hour light is no better than no supplemental lighting at all. We wake the chickens up at around 4 or 5 AM and put them to bed about 8 or 9 PM.

If you don't want chickens to molt or go low in eggs, you need to start the supplemental lighting in August.

Rather than abruptly shutting of the lights (via a simple plug in timer) at night. I tried to let ours go to sleep naturally in the evening. But then we set the timer to come on after about 8 hours of dark/sleep.

Wife: our friends had a bunch of extra eggs this week and were selling them for three dollars a dozen. The cheapest we can buy right now would be 850 to 950 for a flat of five dozen.

We have a chicken tractor that we are planning on fixing up, and my boy alternates between wanting that and wanting something for bow hunting for his birthday

It just amazing how egg prices continue in the doldrums. For three months now, wholesale large carton eggs have been in the .55-.65 range. Hopefully the packers banked some of the money they made in 2025, because they probably need it now. It's nothing unusual to have the market bottom out once in a while, but it's really unusual for this long of a period.

Maybe people got out of the habit of eating eggs when they were expensive.

That could be the case for the overall market. Our egg sales are much higher than normal. It's amazing how quickly people get back in the habit of eating something when the prices drop.

Isn't this the situation that initiated government stabilization of Milk prices. I'm a bit foggy on the details but wasn't the government buying milk in the down market time of year and making cheese or dumping it to artificially raise the demand?

We generally buy direct from farmers, or from families who have too many eggs.

I think some of that happened during Covid with milk when demand suddenly cratered with the schools, restaurants, and other institutions closing.

At these prices the 53 million eggs that the big egg companies are donating as part of the settlement for conspiring to inflate egg prices last year are only worth about $2.5 million. Just another blip on the balance sheet.
