Whose penthouse?
Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:33 pm In fact, all flights were canceled if I remember right because I was supposed to go to Quebec
You going to Quebec hardly seems like enough reason to cancel all flights. Were you planning to fly and they were all worried you might be a dangerous pilot? Cancel all flights to stay out of your way?
Autocorrect must have changed Pentagon to Penthouse.
I can’t remember all the flight cancellation details but I know my Aunt couldn’t fly from WA to Cleveland either- she was to join us in OH to go to Quebec. I forgot! Her flight was cancelled, due to 9/11- but then we were driving to Quebec once she got here 9/12, I forgot that part.
But who cares? I was exposing to John why they put more restrictions when flying.

Our first experience, in real life, with a visitor loving the U.S.A. was in the late 1980’s.

Our son was young, i got to know another mother with a young boy, we all grew to be friends.
Her husband was doing post-doctorate work in physics at the nearby university, he was from Switzerland, i didn’t know what to expect from him - i expected not to have much in common. [Physics. yikes. Trilingual, at least.] She was bilingual, French and English, she was a U.S. student, French major. They met in a donut shop in Paris, she was studying in Paris. Sweet memory. :)

Well. he made it super-easy.

He was quite tall and easy-going, French-Swiss, French accent, fluent in German and English .. quick and enthusiastic.

He LOVED the U.S.!
He was like a kid in a candy shop, everyday was Christmas.

He got on the floor and played with the boys, colored with crayons, like he just discovered childhood.

i remember him trying to relay to us how he loved the way everyone SHARES everything in the U.S.!
Like, ideas. Skills. Work. He felt freedom as not before.

i think he was active in a community pottery-making shop. he wanted to try everything!

Wrt food.
They LOVED McDonalds. Their guilty pleasure. Big Macs.

Aside from that, she/they ate very well, she made their bread, only home made mayo, etc. Everything fresh.
We enjoyed that, we also ate mostly at home, had a small garden, etc. i used to bake all our bread.
We had a lot in common. They made a few Swiss dishes for us, Fondue and Raclette ..

A lot of fun.

i did not expect a post-doctorate in physics to be so down to earth and spontaneous, actually child-like in openness.
nice memories. very nice memories.

i’m getting a kick out of watching visitors enjoy the U.S. in similar ways. Having light-hearted fun.

So funny.
These videos hardly seem real.

After decades of the drip-drip of constant criticism.

i hope they’re real. A nice break. :)

GB News / 'It's incredible!' The World Cup is changing Europe's view of America / 18+min
Have Europeans been given the wrong impression of America?

As thousands of football fans travel to the United States for the FIFA World Cup, British-American commentator Hillary Fordwich explains why so many visitors are leaving with a completely different view of the country than they expected.

From American hospitality and national pride to crime, healthcare, food, tipping culture and media stereotypes, we discuss why so many Europeans say the reality of America is nothing like they've been told.

They might be. i hope so. it’s nice to have a break.

i find them plausible.
after all, the messages are basically those U.S. citizens traveling abroad have learned over+over,
stereotypes are lacking, real people have more in commn than not, reject political divisions .. don’t take yourselves too seriously.

i hope the overall is a net gain for world harmony.

o.yeah.
and my one real life friend from Switzerland, who responded with similar giddinss about the U.S.
that was hard to believe, too. in my own living room!

I haven't watched them but judging a book by the cover, I would guess the reality has been "optimized" to entice you to view it.

i view in spite of those gross/grotesque covers. they’re so often detached from the content.

in the past, with tabloids, not so. i refused to view them. easy.
today, not so easy.

i hope the cover business improves.

It won't improve. And yes, tabloids are a good comparison. Clickbait is clickbait by design. They want to grab your attention, make it look important.

We decide what to click on and what to repost.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Time will tell. i repost when i see worthwhile content.

Even on forum, subject lines frequently do not represent content.
i usually often read anyway. i admit, i reject A LOT without viewing.

On MD, i remember noticing mismatches in thread subject lines, OP content, AND, poll subject lines and content not matching!
It made for chaotic responses. Members would respond to whatever OP part they chose.

In my view, it boils down to reading comprehension.
It requires reading/listening, and THINKING, then questioning.

If there’s no viewing/listening, reading-listening comprehension isn’t a factor.
To each his own.

Ernie has a good way to deal with this.
He often requests members read-listen-view his OP links/content BEFORE responding.
It helps a lot.
