When you come from a country that bans letting the air conditioner part of a heat pump work, yeah, America looks pretty amazing.

Do you know why there’s a limitation on liquid amount John?
What year did you move to America?
“The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in 2006 implemented a policy limiting liquids, gels and aerosols in passenger carry-on luggage to 3.4-ounce containers or smaller, to lessen the chances of liquid explosives being brought onboard commercial aircraft.”

Yes, and it's a ridiculous thing to do when the rest of the world gets by just fine without doing so.Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:08 pm Do you know why there’s a limitation on liquid amount John?

Along with nonsense like taking our shoes off, taking laptops out of bags, although they don't make you do a lot of that anymore.

The 100-ml liquid limit (sounds a lot less arbitrary that way than 3.4 oz) was pretty much global, especially for international flights. Within the last year or so that has been relaxed at some airports such as LHR and FRA with new scanning equipment.JohnH wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:16 pmYes, and it's a ridiculous thing to do when the rest of the world gets by just fine without doing so.Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:08 pm Do you know why there’s a limitation on liquid amount John?

I never had to deal with it on domestic Israeli or domestic Australian flights.ohio jones wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:30 pm The 100-ml liquid limit (sounds a lot less arbitrary that way than 3.4 oz) was pretty much global, especially for international flights. You didn’t answer my question as to when you moved here.JohnH wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:16 pmYes, and it's a ridiculous thing to do when the rest of the world gets by just fine without doing so.Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:08 pm Do you know why there’s a limitation on liquid amount John?

I doubt you were her when 9/11 happened maybe you were.
When the twin towers went down and the plane went down in Pennsylvania, and the one that hit the penthouse, and then Americans watched videos of celebrations going on by terrorist countries, understandably people were afraid to fly. No one knew what to expect to happen next. In fact, all flights were canceled if I remember right because I was supposed to go to Quebec
That being said there were some new procedures put in place for obvious reasons and I never heard anyone until now complain about them.

I was driving on VA 110 past the Pentagon when it got hit. I did not have the presence of mind to grab the disposable camera in my glovebox and take pictures of it, though.I doubt you were her when 9/11 happened maybe you were.
I had just been dismissed from work as I worked at a TV network, and my boss sent those of us who were not essential to newscasting home shortly after the 2nd tower got hit. Traffic was bad so I tried to take a shortcut. I was terrified and just kept driving!
I remember being dismayed at how quickly people turned to hate and violence. I worked with very liberal minded people - in fact, my department didn't have a single Republican. Everyone was democratic or independent-leftist, including myself. But people want revenge. Our staff artist drew a picture of Osama in crosshairs that said "Osama, Yo Mama." All dialogue about complex factors and root causes went out the window. When the twin towers went down and the plane went down in Pennsylvania, and the one that hit the penthouse, and then Americans watched videos of celebrations going on by terrorist countries, understandably people were afraid to fly. I was on a plane as soon as they were flying again (can't remember if it was the Thursday after, or the next Saturday), but I had to drive to Hagerstown to find a flight. I was the only passenger on the plane and the flight attendant was brand new, still reading off her cue cars, with an obviously Muslim name from some African country.

I don't recall if it was enforced on the domestic NZ flight, but I was connecting from an international flight (the domestic terminal at AKL is separate with no airside connection, so I did have to go through security) and didn't have large amounts of liquids anyway. Intra-Schengen it has certainly been enforced. The limits don't really bother me since I pack light.JohnH wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:31 pmI never had to deal with it on domestic Israeli or domestic Australian flights.ohio jones wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 5:30 pm The 100-ml liquid limit (sounds a lot less arbitrary that way than 3.4 oz) was pretty much global, especially for international flights. It's the shoe rule that the rest of the world has thankfully not copied us on.

My old trick used to be to bring a tankard of water with me and simply claim it was for medical purposes (complete with a prescription for it and a doctor's note). That made for some "interesting" trips through security.ohio jones wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 6:04 pmI don't recall if it was enforced on the domestic NZ flight, but I was connecting from an international flight (the domestic terminal at AKL is separate with no airside connection, so I did have to go through security) and didn't have large amounts of liquids anyway. My favourite conversatoin was a TSO who said "Well why should you be able to get away with bringing water through," as if their job was to prevent bringing drinking water through, as opposed to things that are actually dangerous.

Whose penthouse?
You going to Quebec hardly seems like enough reason to cancel all flights. Were you planning to fly and they were all worried you might be a dangerous pilot? Cancel all flights to stay out of your way?
