Y'know, despite all my previous "investigations" this one totally flew under my radar.

Now the question is who was running the thing...
I'd say "who was pulling the strings?" but it being a sock puppet any string pulling would have led to its unravelling.

It's almost tempting to allow the bots and dupes and fake personas if they are at least a bit entertaining, like ole Mose here. The thread really cracks me up.

I have not been able to learn a thing yet from this thread. Is there any seriousness or is it all jest?

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

The account called "Moses" belongs to someone else who is a poster here. However, the "Moses" account's initial schtick was to pretend they were, well, the biblical figure Moses, mostly as a joke in response to an AI spambot that called itself "Aaron".

Since then, this account occasionally pops in and shares his/her opinion anonymously on a matter.

Was the Aaron that posted back in 2020 a real person or an AI spambot.

An AI spambot, and like many spambots, one I suspected was, said so publicly, and then had others get in an argument with me that I'm being mean, just like I've had to deal with with MaxPC/JohnL for years when I've doubted some of his more outlandish claims.

I recall thinking at the time that Aaron was someone's project playing around with that cutting edge new toy, GPT-3. Anybody want to confess?

I lost all doubt when it unleashed rather obvious referral link type of spam. There are myriads of such spam bots that exist who look for any phpBB site to register at and post to; I ran a phpBB tarpit for a while to see just how many of these I could get and ended up with tens of thousands of them.
