Deparagraphization

Post by ohio jones »

I first noticed it in posts shared on Facebook that were rather obviously AI-generated.

Now it's becoming more common, and starting to infest MN.

Even in posts by people who claim to be English teachers and should know better.

"Paragraphs" composed of a single sentence.

Not just an occasional one for emphasis.

All of them.

Repeatedly.

It's painful to read.

I am almost starting to prefer t1's formatting style with one sentence per line and two or three lines per block of text that somewhat resembles a paragraph but really isn't.

Almost.

I apologize that you didn’t appreciate my recent writing. I was annoyed and irritated so I broke up what could have been full paragraphs into single lines for rhetorical emphasis.

I will try not to do that again.

However, there are times when the former preacher in me takes over and breaking up a paragraph in my manuscript is a way to remind me to pause for emphasis. But I understand that a line break looks different than how it sounds.

And this English teacher would also remind you that poetry frequently uses line breaks and negative space in order to create visual emphasis. Even if you don’t appreciate it, “deparagraphization” is a legitimate poetic tool.

So maybe I was writing poetry?

I apologize if my irritation irritated you.

There's a great gulf fixed
between poetry and prose.

They are not the same.

No one does it "better" than Paul did. Run on sentences, with built-in bunny trails.

 I wonder when punctuation was invented cause Paul sure didn't have some of my teachers. I think they gave up on me too.

2600 B.C., although Greeks didn't do it until 300 BC or so, it took a while until everyone did it.

Weren't you a literature teacher?

And it's not always clear to me the translators hustle the punctuation in correctly...

It's really hard to reconstruct a Greek sentence like Luke 1:1-4 in English. The two languages are so different.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.
