Who needs soap operas when we’ve got small towns?

Post by JohnL »

We got a guy around here that’s what we call a pot stirrer. He likes to rile up folks and watch them get into it with each other. He also likes to egg on a man who’s known as the local bully who gets offended and goes at folks about it.
Well to make this a shorter story someone let the bully know what the pot stirrer was up to and let’s just say it didn’t turn out any good for the pot stirring guy. I’m hoping they both learned a lesson.

A family’s coon dog went missing or says the guy who owned him. He was angry because he thought the dog had been stolen but it hadn’t. His wife had loaned the dog to her brother to tree some coons getting into their garbage cans.

The grocery ran out of eggs and is short on potatoes. Everyone around here makes deviled eggs and potato salad for the 4th of July.

Holler news is peaceful compared to the world’s news.

That seems unlikely, considering in my small town they seem to be flooded with eggs due to very cheap prices for eggs and having placed big orders for them back when the weren't so cheap. Maybe you should double check. (Everyone here also makes devilled eggs and potato salad for the 4th of July.)

Is this the same "holler" where you watched a Space Odyssey: 2001? In my "holler" we have one ancient movie theatre and wouldn't have been screening arthouse style films like then. Maybe your holler is much more sophisticated than ours, though.

Wife: this is June 11, and food sanitation would suggest it’s a bad idea to start on Fourth of July cooking yet. Father’s Day maybe, although I personally would wait till Saturday. Maybe an order didn’t come in or they used too many eggs to egg on the bully. if you lived in my aunt and uncle’s small town, I suppose a semi load scrambling down a mountain pass might also cause a shortage.

Well now since the little grocery doesn't have as many deliveries during the month that's always a thing folks do around here is to buy ahead and stock up. So far I have about 11 ham orders that have come in so that will take me about 11 days if I allow for rain. Folks take them home and wrap them in newspaper and those heavy freezer bags and freeze them until a couple days before they serve them. They thaw them in the fridge. They make their deviled eggs and tater salad the night before. I'll fire up the smoker next Wednesday to smoke some pork chops for us to see if it's working all right. It should be fine since I got a new heater element last year.
While I was waiting for Ben to bring my wood chips from the back I was thinking about yall's AC woes and remembered we needed new AC filters for the air returns. Called my wife to ask what size and she also told me we might as well replace those air return grills because they're rusty and some of the slats are bent and she gave me those sizes. I was happy to see the store carried those but now they're more than $50 each. At least they're not the kind that you have to screw and unscrew every time you want to replace a filter. These have little latches that let you open it up and pop in the filter. In my defense I did try to stick to the shopping list but those return grills overshot the landing.

Wife: That’s what we have as well for the grills. They work although the companies going to be replacing the doors as well as everything else. We have a bunch of budget green Walmart filters because the old AC could not stand the higher Merv, so I don’t know if we’ll just use them up or pass them on. Looking forward to the new unit because I think my allergies are kicking up right now from the portable unit in my room.

We also have to come up with a fence for our new outdoor unit so that the neighbor dog doesn’t come and pee on it. It eats away the metal.

Is it July 3?

I'm still trying to imagine any place that would be sold out of eggs because people are making devilled eggs to eat 3 weeks later... during what is one of the biggest gluts of eggs America has ever seen.
