Mennonite colony in Suriname

Post by Disciple of Christ »

According to what I've heard there is now a small Mennonite colony in Suriname that was started quite recently (a few months ago?). Do you know more?

At least on the internet, I cannot find evidence of any currently existing Mennonite colony in Suriname, only that there were programs and proposals for colonies to be established, but none of them ended up happening.

Not yet, settlement to begin in january 2027. But the President of Suriname is trying to stop it again, They still think They can produce food without clearing more land.

I had seen something about it; I don't remember exactly if it was in an interview or a video with an Argentinian real estate agent who was handling the purchase of that land in Suriname. One brother of my former church traveled there promoting some books; that was about a year ago. He mentioned that he met the people who wanted to start a new colony there. They would be a Plautsdiech-speaking community.

I've seen a number of videos about it over the last year or so, but all in Plautdietsch, of which I unfortunately know very little. (They come up on my FaceBook feed because I am a member of a Plaudietsch group there.) What I saw were promotions of opportunities to purchase large tracts of land there.

This reminds one of offers to buy underwater land in Florida.

Another one came up just now, but in Spanish. I only remembered his last name (Geisbrecht, a common Plaudietsch surname), but his first name is Adrian. (Interestingly, Adrian is also a fairly common Plautdietsch surname.... I knew a pastor named Cecil Adrian, who played a part in my early Christian development.)

Just out of curiosity, which is the Plautdietsch group on Facebook?

If there is more than one, I'm not aware of any others.

Some Datsch people (Pennsylvania German) must have seen it, and started one of their own as well.
