You are probably right, I don't know. My impressions are likely biased by the glee of Luther discussing their execution.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2026 11:52 pm That being said, Lutherans came in a distant third.
German Bibles - which versions of the Luther Bible (or other German Bibles) do Conservative Anabaptists use?

I believe he is right. No persecution can be defended, and there's no question that Protestants were significant persecutors, but I don't believe your claim can be substantiated. The largest and most prolonged campaigns of persecution occurred in Catholic-controlled areas.

One wonders the actual motivations of a self-professed traditional Catholic person proclaiming that Protestants actually executed more of a class of people than Catholics did.MattY wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2026 10:06 amI believe he is right. I mean, I have no dog in the fight - I don't particular care who got the #1 high score.

I don't have anywhere near total confidence in AI responses, but here's a question I used as a Google search, so this is Google AI's response.
Did the Catholic church persecute the anabaptists more than any individual Protestant group?
Actual numbers indicate one thing, but desire, willingness, and intent creates a more or less 'level playing field' in attempts to wipe the anabaptists off of the face of the world.]
My wife & I recently visited the castle in Speyer, and I climbed to the top of the tower where some anabaptists were held, some who were executed, and others who were allowed to freeze to death there. I also stuck my foot into the Limnat River near the spot where Feliz Mantz was drowned, at the order of his former friend, Ulrich Zwlingli.

[Emphasis mine. Please interpret the underlined statements in light of the bolded statements.AI Overview
Yes. While both the Roman Catholic Church and various Protestant groups aggressively persecuted Anabaptists, the Catholic Church is historically responsible for the largest total volume of Anabaptist executions, largely due to possessing far greater territorial and political power across Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Key Realities of the Persecution:
The Catholic Church's Role:
Because they controlled the vast institutional power of the Holy Roman Empire and territories like Austria and Spain, Catholic authorities carried out the highest number of Anabaptist executions. The standard punishment for rebaptism decreed by the Catholic-backed Diet of Speyer in 1529 was death, often by burning at the stake or drowning.
Individual Protestant Group Comparisons:
Magisterial Protestant groups (Lutherans, Reformed, and Anglicans) also harshly persecuted Anabaptists, but their reach was historically localized to specific principalities or city-states (such as Zurich, Geneva, or parts of Germany). While Protestant leaders like Huldrych Zwingli, Martin Luther, and John Calvin vehemently opposed Anabaptists and sometimes executed their leaders (such as the Zwinglian execution of Felix Manz by drowning), Protestants ultimately martyred fewer individuals simply because they controlled fewer territories.
Ultimately, the Anabaptists were viewed as a lethal threat by both sides. Their rejection of infant baptism, pacifism (refusal to bear arms or swear oaths), and stance on the separation of church and state undermined the social and political orders of both the Catholic and Protestant established states.

You are probably right that the Bible they use in the church has the apocryphal books, however they don't use them in any of their sermons. I got this straight from someone who was ordained in the Old Order Mennonite church. I am unsure if they use any of the apocryphal books at weddings, like some of the Amish do.JohnH wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2026 10:23 pmAre you sure of that? The last one I looked at certainly had the apocryphal books in it, and they also tend to read from the passages in a rather ossified manner at weddings. Hutterites also have the apocryphal books.HansMacDonald wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2026 8:34 pmOld Order Mennonites don't use the apocryphal books. There is somewhat of a "conspiracy" amongst ultra-conservative Mennonite type of groups to try to distribute 1912 Lutherbibels with the apocryphal books removed. Some ultra-conservative groups teach that the Amish & Old Order Mennonites, etc. are not genuine Christians because they use a "false" Bible.
I continue to maintain that one of the biggest errors that happens when a plain group switches to English, or transitions from Old Order to "conservative Mennonite" etc., is that they take a pair of scissors to their Bibles.

He could really turn a phrase, but he and his followers tended to use exile more than burning.barnhart wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2026 6:37 amYou are probably right, I don't know. The strict branch of the Fröhlich denomination. You have to realize this movement has splintered into many different sects.MennoSimons1998 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2026 8:41 pmThis group here?, the same ones founded by Fröhlich?

Yes I know that they have many factions, just wanted to know if they are descended from the denomination founded by Fröhlich.Swiss Brah wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2026 4:35 pmThe strict branch of the Fröhlich denomination.
