I'm sitting in the lobby at a garage while getting new tires on my car and working remotely. I'm trying to not be distracted by the audio from a movie that is playing on the TV but not being very successful. There are a variety of reasons why I rarely watch movies but one is that that the conversations are so fake and so samish.
Why do they all talk the same way? Same kinds of voices, same tone of voice. same kinds of sentence structure, and conversations that nobody ever does in real life, etc. And it is basically the same things I heard since seeing such stuff on TV occasionally since a child. And of course, interspersed with ads that are nauseating.
Why do people watch this stuff?

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

Re: Movies
I don't watch all movies, and I'm guessing the ones I watch don't fit your description. Did you catch the name of the movie that was playing? When you say "they all" in your OP, what movies are you comparing it to?
I do think there are some good movies.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Re: Movies
A large part of movies/TV is comfort. The format is predictable and you get a “routine”. Eventually you feel like you have relationships with the characters.
Horror and thriller type movies are a bit different.

Re: Movies
This is funny. Because I’ve done the opposite. I have watched TV without the sound, and I was struck by the same phenomenon. Just watching without sound, I was impressed by the clear insincerity and exaggerated facial expressions and hand motions. It was interesting to realize how easily I was watching some one act if I could not hear anything.Ernie wrote: ↑Fri Jun 05, 2026 2:08 pm I'm sitting in the lobby at a garage while getting new tires on my car and working remotely. Yes, I've done that also on airplanes occasionally and noticed the same things.R7ehr wrote: ↑Fri Jun 05, 2026 3:05 pmThis is funny. Because I’ve done the opposite. Re: Movies
Doesn't all acting have it's customs that give clues and context but seem silly or unnatural to outsiders? I get that feeling with movies from the 1940's, they sound like they are on stage giving a formal address to someone in the back row. Opera and classical Japanese theater are foreign to me and seem very, very strange.

Re: Movies
Tire shop TV atmosphere is the worst imaginable place to watch a movie. A theatre or at home is way more preferable. If you do that you might understand the appeal. Also a movie you pick yourself. Though i havent watched a movie since i was about 17, i entertained myself through other forms of media.

Once I was getting my braces changed out and they put on Wayne's World. I think I was around 12. It was a surreal experience.Anthony wrote: ↑Fri Jun 05, 2026 3:53 pm Tire shop TV atmosphere is the worst imaginable place to watch a movie. A theatre or at home is way more preferable. Re: Movies
I love movies.
I love them because I love storytelling and for what they reveal about the culture and time they were made in.
So one of the dynamics about film is that it’s both a commercial product and an art form. Films that are more commercial often end up being the same thing over and over because studios today are risk-adverse and try to make movies that appeal to as many as people as possible. Movies like that aim for what’s familiar and comfortable.
Films that lean more artistic tend to be more unique with a distinct artistic voice and vision. An Alfred Hitchcock or Martin Scorsese film has distinct characteristics that identify the movie as something they created. The same with genre, time period and country. A Hong Kong martial arts popcorn flick is completely different from a 1920s silent German Expressionist film.
There’s a broad range of variety of movies, but you also have to look outside of the algorithm and what’s on TV.

Speaking of which, it's very interesting to see what can be done with Grok Imagine now:Szdfan wrote: ↑Fri Jun 05, 2026 5:28 pm I love movies.

It would be hard-pressed to tell this were not a multi-million dollar production and is actually all built with AI.
