Bellicosity, particularly hopping into bed with a bellicose, unreliable ally like Russia, has its price.

What is sadder is that the Cuban regime is still unwilling to agree to terms that would mean no more infant and child deaths have to be on the rise. But so far they don't want to let go out of power.

What demands have been put on them to end the blockade?

Release political prisoners, transition to democratic elections and end one party rule that is effectively rule by one family, allow more freedom of speech, and allow adjudication of property stolen from its rightful owners by the Communist regime.

The specific act of Congress requiring the blockade is the Helms-Burton act in the present era, but there has been a blockade since 1958.

Indeed, they should instead hop into bed with a different bellicose, unreliable ally.

The act doesn't require that. They could choose to be non-aligned. Lots of other countries are.

With friends and allies like the United States, who needs enemies?

For these small countries like Cuba, it's like pick your poison.

But it really is amazing that all these years, they have chosen to ally themselves with a country from the other side of the globe that has little to no actual ability to help it withstand a vastly superior nation that is 94 miles away and LITERALLY HAS A MILITARY BASE ON THEIR ISLAND.

Cuba barely matters on the world scene. It has to leech onto some great power in order to sustain itself. Russia isn't doing all that great these days. It would make sense geopolitically for Cuba to make a change.

Wife: got onto a bunny trail into Cuban history, and I’m guessing the reason why they chose to align with Russia vs US was because the previous president/dictator before the Castros exploited them for American interests. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulgencio_Batista I wouldn’t be surprised though if a lot of Cubans nowadays might want to be aligned with the United States

They did have a strong relationship with the Venezuela. It should have been obvious that was not a good long term strategy though.

Venezuela is apparently now happy to ship large amounts of sour oil to America refineries which can turn it into $$$

Maybe they will form close ties with China.
