music makes me cry.

i have often cried in church, message and music. i tried not to! i hid it as much as possible. sometimes so hard to do.
i once (apologetically confessed) this to a burly older man, an astute, possibly uncompromising businessman in our church.
he surprised me when he didn’t hesitate to softly say, “that’s ok. i do, too.”

he passed many years ago. that’s close to all i remember of him. it’s enough.

This morning, Vivaldi. Winter.
The music is stunning, i didn’t know any of the history (until i read in the link).
When i listen now, i can’t hold the tears .. my grdaughter plays cello. She played this with her (public school orchestra) ..
i was there for their performance. (i didn’t cry there.) i was stunned. i cry now. for the gift of the memory.

They played it in 2022, i viewed on zoom. P2+3: https://forum.mennonet.com/viewtopic.php?t=71&start=10

Description:
Wait... A priest wrote THIS?
You’ve definitely heard The Four Seasons, but did you know it was composed by a Catholic priest?

Antonio Vivaldi, aka The Red-Haired Priest, wasn’t just wearing a cassock — he was teaching music to orphaned girls and writing some of the most iconic pieces in history.

His music doesn’t just sound divine… it is.
Nature. Storms. Beauty. God’s creation, captured in sound.
Faith and art have always been one.
Did her orchestra teacher know the history?

Vivaldi, Winter. Again: :)

Barber - AGNUS DEI (arr. Adagio for Strings) - Laurens Symfonisch - LIVE / 8+min
Agnus Dei (arr. Adagio for Strings)
Samuel Barber (1910-1981)

Choir:
Laurens Symfonisch (formerly known as Rotterdam Symphony Chorus) - part of Laurens Vocaal.
Wiecher Mandemaker - conductor

Live performance during Bosch Requiem 2015 in Sint-Janskathedraal, 's-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, 6 November 2015.

The concert was part of a tour with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Found in Comments: @monctonstrong8423 WROTE:
“John the Baptist ushered the most powerful string of words ever uttered by a human in the past and future history of the universe
when he saw Jesus and exclaimed “behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” “

"Agnus Dei" - Laurens Symfonisch

September 1966. New York's new Metropolitan Opera opens with an opera by Barber. In the middle of the performance, the set breaks on stage. The critics destroy the opera.

Months later, his mother died. Barber disappeared in the Alps. Drinking, barely composing a note. He was 57 years old.

It was there, at rock bottom, that he returned to a melody that already existed:
the one he had written at 26 years old, the Adagio for Strings, from 1936. He didn't write new music. He barely changed a note of the score. He did one thing only: he clothed that old melody with the Latin text from the Catholic mass.

"Miserere nobis" — have mercy on us —
is a plea that the mass repeats for centuries, with no owner, spoken by any mouth that prays.
In Barber's voice, after the public failure and his mother's death, that plea is no longer for everyone.

He is praying for mercy for himself.

Agnus Dei - Samuel Barber LIVE / -8min

This is a beautiful German hymn I love to listen to every now and then. The title of the song in English is "there are two roads".

Happy coincidence.
My grdaughter returned from a college retreat in the Montana mountains today, i’ve heard she has a picture of the Milky Way!
i will forward this piece to her. i may not hear from her for days. They’re keeping the students so busy.

She probably got an extra-great view of the Milky Way with the lack of light pollution in the Montana outback.

The music of Constance Demby is actually categorized as a niche genre called "space music". It is good music to listen to while star-gazing.
